Arizona man gave gun to daughter, 14, told her to kill herself, officials say

    Fox News

Ulys Laffette Bell IV is accused of giving his daughter a handgun and telling her to kill herself. (Mohave County Sheriff’s Office)

An Arizona dad was so fed up with his 14-year-old daughter's disciplinary issues he handed the girl a gun Sunday and told her to pull the trigger, police said.

Ulys Laffette Bell IV, 38, of Fort Mohave, gave the 9mm handgun to his daughter Sunday and instructed her to commit suicide, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said.

The teenager reported the incident Monday to school officials who informed police, 3 News Las Vegas reported.
Bell admitted to authorities he had disciplinary issues with his daughter and gave her a gun to shoot herself with, officials said. He told police the gun was not loaded at the time of the incident.

Sue Callahan, the sheriff’s office spokeswoman, said officials couldn't confirm the gun was unloaded at the time of the alleged incident.
Bell was jailed on suspicion of disorderly conduct with a weapon, child abuse and endangerment.
It was not immediately known whether Bell had an attorney.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

My attempt at brevity will be this: "When he gave her the gun and told her to pull the trigger, she should have shot him in the head."

I know... the gun wasn't loaded.

I got 50 cents I'd have loaned her for a good round.

Dad had a cattle prod. His daughters had an hour to finish chores before he used it, police say

UPDATED 3 HOURS 1 MINUTES AGO
It’s supposed to be used to herd livestock, like cattle or hogs.
But that’s not the only thing a 36-year-old father in Swan, Iowa, was using his hand-held electric livestock prod for, according to police. Travis Coker was also allegedly shocking his children with the tool as punishment, WKBT reports.
Coker was arrested on two counts of felony child endangerment, the TV station reports, and pleaded not guilty to both charges in Marion County court on Thursday.
If his adopted 11- and 13-year-old girls failed to complete their chores in under an hour on the family’s farm, Coker would shock them once for every additional five minutes they required, Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt told KCCI.

A livestock prod causes pain when its high-voltage, low-current electric shock hits the skin.
“They weren’t doing the chores fast enough, so he decided to use an electronic cattle prod to discipline the children,” Sandholdt said.
Iowa’s Department of Human Services had started investigating Coker after one of the dependents whom he allegedly shocked told someone about the form of discipline, the Des Moines Register reports. When the sheriff’s office went to investigate at the family’s farm in Swan, Coker and his wife both confirmed the victim’s account of his punishment method, police said.
Swan is a small town just southeast of Des Moines, in central Iowa.
Coker was booked at the Marion County jail after he was arrested, but has since been released on $5,000 bond, the Register reports.
He isn’t allowed to be in contact with the two girls, WHO-TV reports.
There is also a biological son and an adopted son in the family, KCCI reports. The sheriff told the TV station that he’d received calls from the parents before requesting help because of the children’s behavioral problems.
Coker will next appear in court on Jan. 18, KCCI reports. He has not yet entered a plea.

Wendell Earl Popejoy Ottawa County Sheriff's Office

A Michigan man charged with murdering his neighbor confessed to killing the woman after seeing her blowing snow out of his driveway, court records show. Wendell Earl Popejoy, 63, of Ottawa County, confessed to shooting his neighbor, Sheila Bonge, 59, according to court documents obtained by the Grand Haven Tribune. Popejoy, who had no prior criminal record, told Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Detective Anne Koster that he “made the decision” to kill the woman after seeing Bonge outside on Dec. 26, blowing snow from the easement driveway in front of his home in the 14000 block of 104th Avenue. “Wendell stated that he had made the decision when he saw Sheila to kill her,” Koster said during a hearing Sunday, according to a court transcript. “He then grabbed a gun from his home. He went out to the easement where Sheila was blowing the snow. Wendell stated that he went up behind Sheila and shot her in the back of the head and disposed of her body behind his residence.”

Police found Bonge’s body two days later. She had been reported missing by relatives earlier that week after last being seen on Dec. 24 at her home, MLive.com reports. Popejoy was arrested on Dec. 29 and was arraigned Tuesday in Grand Haven District Court on charges of open murder and using a firearm in commission of a felony. Details of the relationship between Bonge and Popejoy are unclear, but a friend of Bonge’s told WZZM that she had ongoing disputes with several neighbors. One of the woman’s neighbors — not Popejoy — unsuccessfully sought a protection order against Bonge and her fiancé, according to court documents obtained by the station. The order, pertaining to a disagreement regarding Bonge’s use of an easement, was not granted, however. Deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office had been called to the neighborhood more than five times recently for disputes between neighbors, WOOD reports.
Bonge’s family, meanwhile, said they’re still “in shock due to the heinous nature” of the crime, according to a statement released to the station. “We are deeply saddened by the fact that there is nothing we or anyone can do to bring our mother back,” according to the statement. “She was loved dearly by so many for her sweet and caring nature. She was selfishly and brutally taken from us far too soon. We have no other choice but to put our faith in the justice system.”

An online fundraiser has been established in Bonge’s memory and to help offset funeral expenses.

“She was suddenly taken away from her family in such a cruel senseless way,” according to the website. “She was a mother, a grandma, a great-grandma, aunt, and a sister. She was loved very much and will be deeply missed.”
Popejoy remains held without bail at the Ottawa County Jail, records show. He’s due to return to court for a probable cause conference Jan. 10, according to Grand Haven Tribune.

Alexander Grunke guilty in plot to rob grave for corpse sex

Thursday, July 22, 2010 by Hart Van Denburg in NewsAlexander C. Grunke, corpse-for-sex grave robber.
What, there weren't enough live women in Wisconsin? Alexander C. Grunke has been found guilty in a grave-robbing caper that came about because his brother allegedly wanted to have sex with a corpse. Protected sex, no less. That's cold.

Grunke, of Mount Horeb, was charged with attempted third-degree sexual assault. He'd previously been convicted of criminal damage to a cemetery and theft. His brother, Nicholas, was found guilty on three similar charges last year.
The story goes like this: The Grunke boys and a third guy, Dustin Radke, paid a visit to a Cassville cemetery in 2006 so they could dig up the body of Laura Tennessen, who had been buried just the week before after dying in a motorcycle crash -- they'd seen her picture in the local newspaper.
The idea was to dig her up, then haul her corpse back to a spot behind Nicholas's home, where he could fulfill some seriously twisted necrophiliac fantasy. On the way to the cemetery they even stopped at Wal-Mart to pick up some condoms.
The poor woman's body was spared the ultimate indignity when the guys were nabbed by the local cops; they'd already dug down to the top of the vault holding her coffin when they panicked and were picked up after being reported for acting suspicious.
Later in court, Nicholas denied he wanted to have sex with her corpse. No, just some quality "platonic" time, he insisted. To which Grant County Assistant Attorney Tony Pozorski told the jury, "you don't need a box of condoms to carry on a conversation. You don't need a box of condoms to go chit chat."
Nicholas Grunke, top, Alexander Grunke, middle, and Dustin Radke, bottom

You can read the whole sordid criminal complaint at The Smoking Gun.
Here's the grave-robbing triple threat: Nicholas Grunke, top, Alexander Grunke, middle, and Dustin Radke, bottom.

Patterson defense objects to introducing shirt, previous assault into manslaughter trial evidence

By Helmut Schmidt on Jan 30, 2018 at 5:30 p.m.

    13

Darren Patterson is shown wearing a shirt with the phrase "Talk Shit Get Hit HUSTLER" in a public post on his wife's Facebook page from 2012.3 / 3

FARGO — The defense team of Darren Patterson, the man accused of manslaughter and assault in a fatal brawl outside the HoDo last summer, is objecting to two pieces of evidence the prosecution wants to present at trial, according to Cass County District Court documents.

The defense, in documents filed Jan. 11, is objecting to the introduction of a photo of Patterson posted in 2012 to his wife's Facebook page that shows the man wearing a shirt they say would be unfairly prejudicial to the case.
The defense is also objecting to evidence that he assaulted another man in 2010 at Dempsey's Public House in Fargo.
Patterson faces felony manslaughter, felony aggravated assault and misdemeanor simple assault charges in connection with a May 27, 2017, fight outside the HoDo Restaurant and Lounge, 101 Broadway N.
According to court documents, Patterson is accused of getting into an altercation with three men, including James "Jamie" Grant. Grant died after he was allegedly punched by Patterson, fell and hit the back of his head on the ground.
Patterson also allegedly knocked Christopher Sang unconscious, and allegedly struck Jamie Grant's brother, Jeffrey Grant, in the mouth.
According to Patterson's defense — led by attorney Bruce Quick of the Vogel Law Firm — the "shirt evidence" and the "Dempsey's evidence" are both inadmissible.
The shirt evidence is improper evidence of character, attempting to infer that Patterson is aggressive or violent and that the shirt is a statement that he would commit a particular bad act and/or was in the state of mind to do so, the defense said in its filing. Overall, the defense said allowing the shirt evidence would be unfairly prejudicial to Patterson.
The prosecution in an earlier filing said the words on Patterson's shirt, which said
"Talk Shit Get Hit," showed his frame of mind and that "he intended to physically injure those who disrespected him."
The defense also wrote that introducing evidence about the Aug. 29, 2010, assault of Casey Carr at Dempsey's Bar is improper "bad act" evidence. In that case, Patterson allegedly head-butted Carr because he believed Carr had disrespected him.
"Evidence of the act (in 2010) is proof of the defendant's intent in this case," the prosecution's notice of intent said.
The defense said the prosecution is trying to imply that Patterson is violent and intended to commit an assault outside the HoDo because he had previously assaulted someone, a connection not allowed by law.
Introducing the Dempsey's assault into evidence would also be unfairly prejudicial, the defense asserted, and is a prosecution attempt to play on the jury's raw emotion.
In December, documents unsealed by the court after objections by Gray Television Group, parent company of Fargo's KVLY-TV, indicated that the prosecution sought to have the shirt and previous assault evidence introduced at trial.
Prosecutors said in unsealed documents that after Patterson and the victims were kicked out of separate entrances to the HoDo, Patterson hurried back to confront the victims as they were walking away.
"Put simply, the defendant intended to assault, and actually did assault, the victims because they had disrespected him," according to the documents. The documents added that multiple witnesses saw Patterson strike and knock two victims to the ground, while no other witnesses saw either victim attempt any strikes against Patterson.
According to the documents, a video confirms Patterson hurried past all entrances to the bar to confront the victims.

A toddler took a cupcake. He died after the baseball bat came out, police say

    By Scott Berson

    January 31, 2018 09:49 AM
Updated 1 hour 13 minutes ago

It was Oct. 21, 2017, and 3-year-old Kejuan Mason wasn’t breathing when police pulled up to a “roach-infested” home in southwest Atlanta. An emergency medical worker from Grady Memorial Hospital was attempting to perform CPR on the boy, to no avail.
The toddler was eventually taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
How it happened is a tale of three stories.

The child’s guardian, 25-year-old Glenndria Morris, told police she gave the boy - and other children in the home - a cupcake, and he began choking. When he passed out, Morris told police she and another man performed CPR because emergency personnel were taking too long to arrive, reported WXIA.
Later, she told a different story, according to a police report obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Now, Morris said the boy did start choking, but they removed the cupcake and he was “breathing and talking later.” He was tired and went to sleep, but when they checked on him, but he wasn’t breathing anymore, and so they called 911.

At the time, detectives pushed for more information. Who was the child’s mother? Morris and her sister “did not want to cooperate” and refused to give that information, police told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Now, officials say neither of the stories Morris told are what actually happened.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) statistics show that more than 700,000 children are referred to child protective agencies as a result of abuse or neglect in the U.S. each year. According to Purva Grover, M.D., a pediatric emergency physician at Cleveland Clinic Children’s, child abuse is something that unfortunately pediatricians and emergency room physicians are always on the lookout for, but parents need to know the warning signs of physical abuse too, especially when their children are left in the care of others.

Instead, police allege that Glenndria Morris spanked the child while her sister LaShirley beat the boy in the head, torso, legs and arms with a baseball bat. The reason? Because Kejuan sneaked in and ate a cupcake from the kitchen, Fulton County district attorney spokesman Dexter Bond told the AJC. Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that Kejuan died of blunt force trauma to the head and torso, not from choking, the station reported. The sisters were charged with murder, according to jail records. They were arrested back in October, released on bond after 90 days in jail and then indicted Tuesday. Police told WXIA there were three adults in the home at the time, along with four other children, including the victim’s brother. The biological parents were not in the home. The boy’s mother, Geraldine Mason, asked a judge to remove her son from Morris’ guardianship after noticing bruises and scratches, but her request was denied on Oct. 18 - three days before the boy’s death, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“I told DFCS. I told the juvenile system, the court - I told everybody,” Mason told CBS 46. “I said, 'I think y'all need to do something because someone's beating on my children.' They did not listen to me. Not one time. They did not listen to me.”
Mason’s children entered DFCS after she was arrested on a reckless conduct charge, according to the AJC. The mother told Fox 5 she had lost custody of the children after she no longer had a place to live. Mason told Fox 5 Morris was a “friend” who had been a part of her childrens’ lives for a long time. “I'm still grieving, I'm mad, I'm upset and I'm angry, but I have to have peace for my other grand-babies that need me,” Kejuan's grandmother Xavier Upshaw told Fox 5. “We want justice, we're not going to go to sleep on this.”
