I have a buddy coming to try his hand at taking a velvet buck and all of my bucks are still in velvet, but the season is still 8 days away. Anyone seeing hard horned bucks yet??

As of last weekend all my pics had them in velvet. This is west of Bis. I'll be checking them again this weekend and let you know. I'd imagine like most years he'll have at least a couple weeks for most.

IMO its a waste to harvest what would be a nice buck prematurely... Never really had a thing for fuzzy antlers personally.

September 1st is the magic date for velvet after that they shed it fast and by the 7th I would guess 90 percent have shed

I shot one velvet buck and I think that is enough for me. However, we always hunt opening weekend so if a big enough buck came by, he would not get a pass just because he is in velvet.
Saw 2 nice bucks yesterday and both were in velvet.

I seen 6 bucks this morning one the way to the goose field. Not one of them bigger than 22 inches. They all still had velvet.

They can get the velvet off real quick too. Last year i passed up small 4x4 that came in to the stand in full velvet. The next evening he was back with only a small piece of velvet hanging off.

Why would you be wasting? When our bow season starts antlers are fully grown. To each their own. If you don't want to shoot a velvet buck that is your choice.

I've had them come in full velvet, leave and come back an hour or two later all cleaned up. Pretty crazy, I guess when they want it off they want it off!

I checked cameras yesterday. Only had one deer that was stripped but had pictures of 2 others that were starting to rub.
