I just got home for lunch. Let the dog out and looked in the backyard and sure as shit there’s 4 chukars. I live outside city limits of west Fargo. Can I legally shoot one? I’d like to shoot two actually... lol. Mount one and eat one.

NO!! You can't shoot one in your back yard. That's cheating!! You have to go climb the cliffs and peaks of Idaho like I did for 5 days before you can shoot one. Just kidding. Back yard birds are just easier. Go whack'em. They're NOT icky.

Yep pretty common around Bismarck, unfortunately i live in city limits so just watch them and let my dog out after them. They are pretty cool birds though.

wife came running out the backyard while screaming about a chicken in the garden. She had no idea what a chukar was.

Me and a few buds went to a pheasant farm in MN about a month ago. Bought 20 pheasants and 1 chukkar. We each put $20 in the hat going to the person who downs the Chukkar. Damn thing got up for one of the buds on his side. $20 bucks down the drain. Damn chukkars. haha They are cool birds though. haha Damn chukkars.

I've seen quite a few right in the city of Bismarck in years past. However not last year. Had one pecking at a window at a condo several years ago. I snuck around the condo and got in another door. Walked to the door where the chukkar was pecking at the window and because the glass was pretty much a one way glass, i got within a foot of the critter. Know the birds were getting fed by some peeps up near the fire station on divide and 25th. One of the fellows i know that had been feeding them has run into health problems. That may be why i haven't seen any lately. See 'em up on the roofs of houses in the winter once in a while.

Looked in the ND hunting regs and couldn't see that chukars were addressed at all. If it is legal to take, I would say have at it. If they are released birds, they will not have a 5% survival rate over the winter (just my guess.)

They have been thriving around Bismarck for many years. I used to see them in the 90’s. Northeast part of Bismarck.

Does this mean there's a breeding population in bismarck. I get to look forward to future hunting opportunities

At our place in Bismarck, we have about 10 of them roaming the neighborhood.

What I’ve learned from this thread: there is definitely a population 2.5 hours to your west. They are nonmigratory and not a regulated gamebird. Show no mercy. Also Idaho sounds like a place where people go to work harder than they have to.
