Bud and I are considering a May trip to fish Rainy River to try something different. Would be interested in hearing from anglers that have been up their the past spring or two. DIY or guide? General areas to consider fishing / staying? Feedback will be appreciated.
Thx!

Think Spring!!

May won't be that bad as all the ramps are open and people are in the bay/lake. Fishing will all depend on the spring. If you are staying around Wheeler's point I like Lake Road Lodge when pulling a boat to different accesses. You can back right up to your room door and plug in.

If you are just going to the fish around the wheelers area and are planning on slipping the boat there are lots of options. We stay at Sportsmans a lot and are happy with it. The lodge rooms and villas are nice, but the cabins are rough.

For having fish cooked river bend and wheeler's are our groups favorite places to have fish. Ballard's has a lot of stuff on the menu they smoke that is good.

You must be talking about fishing the opener in May. Most people are on the lake/gap/four mile bay at that time. There’s still some fish in the river, but not like the early April run. Wheelers ramp is usually really busy at that time. The river ramps would be pretty quiet.
