An old Mitchell Riptide 40CD was given to me, but the line-counter part of it doesn’t work quite right. It counts a bit below half of the length of the line that’s actually out. Has anyone tore into these reels to work on them? I’m a bit of a tinker-er, and can’t just throw something out if there’s a chance I can fix it for significantly less than the cost of a new reel.

Is it counting yards out rather than feet?

Not quite that either. I measured 40’ out in the yard, then pulled line off the reel. Reel showed 17’. In yards, 40’ would be just over 13’.

How much line is on it? They need to be FULL to be accurate.

May just need to be calibrated with a full spool.

Line counters work by counting revolutions of the spool not the line passing through the guide (so line diameter does make a difference).

Most have a little internal cog that flips the counter. Sometimes the cogs get gunked up or worn so a revolution doesn't always register.

You should be able to tell if the dial is counting smoothly if you watch it while pulling line.

Not much too harm by pulling it apart if it is that far off with a full spool.

it would have to be extremely full to only show 17 at 40......it does not sound like that is the issue

Lincoln, kinda...
They read in meters

a meter is longer than a yard, so it should only read about 12 if he measured 40 ft.

p.s. Maybe this the reason the old reel was given to the OP?

most likely because it’s not full. I had two I used for many years. They’re not very accurate but they do duplicate the same distance. When I was letting out 120’ on my daiwas the Mitchell’s were running 35-37 out with same lure side by side to tick bottom
