So this is an argument we had in our deer camp several times.

What is everyone's thoughts on taking a doe who has a fawn with her. Some will argue that if the fawn no longer has spots that it will survive the winter and be just fine without mom. Spots or no spots on the fawn, I will not take that doe. ND winters are tough and I'm sure that fawn learns a lot that first winter would be willing to bet the fawn survival rate is higher with mom around. I have no evidence to support my argument however. Thoughts?

I don't harvest moms either. Fawns have to be better off with mom.

besides that, dry does are tasty does.

From what i have read fawns can survive on their own after a couple weeks of being born. Don't know if that is true, just what i have read.

With that said, i personally wouldn't take a doe with a fawn until later in the season.

Without mom those deer die. The coyotes get em immediately. I saw a pup coyote chase a fawn down the other day. He came out of the beans but the deer didnt.

The little effer was too quick and got into a tree belt. Momma doe came out of the tree belt and stood on the road looking for the fawn.

So this means your a bad shot and missed.

Let the mom go and shoot the fawn, they are better than 50lb pigs on a BBQ...

I orphaned a fawn last year. Last day of the season and zero deer between my dad, brother and myself. Needed sausage. It's a predator vs prey situation. I don't like to do it but it is what it is. I killed a few yotes during the season so my karma is in check.

Wouldn't the fawn likely end up herding up with other deer, likely older ones as well, to learn how to survive the winter? Guessing much of it is instinctual at that point.
