I currently shoot a .223 bolt action for my coyote rifle. It has treated me well in most situations. I am considering getting a larger cartridge rifle. If YOU were to buy a new coyote rifle today what would you by. Im looking for all input. Brand, cartridge, bipod brand, synthetic/wood, scope???

I will be putting a bipod on it. 90% of the coyotes I shoot are on stand. Looking for a larger than .223

243 is tough to beat for a good all around varmint gun. Many bullets and loads to pick from and hits hard at some distance. I have a custom 243 that shoots 105 grain bullets that i use primarily. My other one is a 204 Ruger that works well on coyotes also.

I have a wild idea to put together a Rem 700 SPS in 7mm-08 that will have minute of coyote at 1000 yards for a $1000 or less this winter. I have no clue what I am doing or how it will turn out but I bet I learn a lot.

Is there any reason in particular that you're looking at something larger than a .223? Longer range, heavier bullet, flatter trajectory, etc.?

Personally, I prefer a .204 or 22.250 because of the speed and flat trajectory. Only issue I have with the .204 is the small bullets don't do very well in the wind. Bumping up to a .243 would be a good option. You will lose quite a bit of speed, but the larger bullets will be able to buck the wind a little better.

All in all, my vote stays with the .204, with a 40grn bullet (take your pick on brand).

If pelts are of no consequence then any rifle you can shoot well gets my vote. If pelts are important, then the 204 to 223 gets my nod as long as they are pushing a good bullet. 243's put a larger hole in the pelt then I like to deal with most of the time. Even with the lighter bullets. As far as brand, I really like the older SAKO's in bolt action for the smaller calibers. 222 mag being my overall favorite. JMHO though.

I use an AR .223, fun to shoot when they are on the run.

I won a .204, I haven't shot it yet, but will be sighting it in soon, and probably use it for yotes, unless its blowing crazy like it does in ND 97.2% of the time

I use a 22-250. I like them or a .243 for coyotes. As for the rest I would go with synthetic (more durable in snow etc.), Harris bipod, 4-16 power scope is what I would go with.

Not where I'd like to be
Cant go wrong with 243 Win.

It may be bullet dynamics, shot placement, etc, etc, but I've seen several yotes run off after a solid hit with a 223.
When hit with a 243 (I like the 87gr V-max), they just go straight down.

I have a howa in both a 223 and a 22-250. Both good guns and very fur friendly. They come with a half decent scope also.

I have a tikka 243 that I use most of the time with 65 grain vmax. Once I got an ar15 I prefer that for quick follow up shots and low recoil. The ar15 with a 24 inch bull barrel and 55 grain vmax puts 3 shot touching at 100 yards and has killed every coyote I hit instantly

If I was to buy a new one it would be a howa 1500 in 22-250 with a decent 4-16 or 6-18 scope and be shooting 55 grain v max or move up to the hornady 75 grain hollow point boat tails
