I am wanting to get a handheld gps for ice fishing. I have zero experience with these, so I am wondering what you guys are using? I would like it to have contour map compatability and would like it to be less than $600. Hopefully it will also be used for hunting out west someday also.

buy the navionics boating app. you will be surprised at how many contours they have around here and you can icon if need be. all you need is a smart phone.

The Garmin 64 with a Trax chip has done all I have asked for it at a good price. Buttons instead of touch screen with the tradeoff being a smaller screen. I think it's user friendly as well. Haven't needed it enough yet to stretch out the battery life but definitely better than my old Lowrance iFinder Hunt.

I have had 3 or 4 of them. I bought a Helix and am done with it. I get the good maps, a depth finder and I can actually see the screen and it was less than $500.

The smartphone apps can be good from what I hear but I have not used them.
