Was fishing north of wing today and the lake I was on the ice varied drastically from spot to spot. First spot was 18 inches second spot 200 yards away was only 9!!! The warm weather didn't appear to have damaged the ice much so this looks to be just random variations in the ice caused by the snowpack most likely.

To top off a slow day my buddy texted that he fell through only a few yards out from the casinos ramp down on oahe on foot. Luckily for him it was mainly only one leg to start with so he had time to lay flat before his other leg busted all the way through. Turns out that spot the ice was only 3 to 5 inches. Would guess the current undermined the ice there. So like I was saying be on your guard especially driving!

There is a 24 hour tourney down here today won't surprise me if some one gets oiled up and doing cookies on the ice and goes through. It happened last year and ice was way better. Lots of open water under the bridges here.

14 day outlook. Below norm temps above normal precip

Really where is that at? Just looking at the ten day for here and it's above normal all but a week from Monday. As long as we can keep the ground clear of snow I bet we see a pretty big jump in the over all temps.

That will probably hold true for NE and what not with the big storm rolling it but its not set to be correct for Bismarck. Loosing the snow changes everything and the forcast has bumped up a fair chunk over night.

The main channel runs right out in front of the little bay where they have the ramp. I wouldn't walk there ever.

Yep and there in lies the rub....most of the best fishing has been. Better to get further south where there is less current. For those that don't know the lake that well the casinos rap is just kiddy corner to the mouth of Beaver Bay. Here is where it happened.IMG_20160131_130811.jpg

Pick up dropped through on a central nd lake this week. I fished central ND and I would say the ice took a hit with the warm wheather. The top inch or 2 was pretty bad and sketchy ice. Ice on this lake was from 12-20" depending on where at. Walleye were not willing but after running and gunning drilling prolly 60+ we got on a fantastic perch bite with fish from 10-13" very aggressive bite.

Oh I'm sure oahe took a hit but she didn't have much for any snow pack. No snow means you make ice fast but you can also loose it fast. Now crimmins where I was the ice its self was fine because the snow on top absorbed most of the beating this week. But with much of the snow it had now gone the ice will begin to suffer and we just don't have enough of it to spare this year. We may have had the shortest window for driving on in some time.....well other then back in 2011.

I was on Sakakawea and last weekend the ice was about 11 inches. This weekend it was 8.5. Same spot. I saw the Crooked report that said 12" I fished there nearly a month ago and it was 12" then. It makes me worry that there could be some real bad spots out there.

Cooler and wet for the first part of February.

Especially for this time of year, don't get too hung up on the CPC calling for a higher than normal chance of above normal precip in the shorter outlooks (6-10 or 8-14). Our normal for this time of year is around a half an inch per month. So something around 0.015 inches of moisture a day, on average. If there's any reasonable chance of a snow storm on a day during the listed timeframe, you are looking at about 0.1 inches of moisture for an inch and a half of snow.

Hence they call it above normal but most people would think of something more than a mere inch and a half of snow being what could result in that above normal designation.

These numbers are mostly for explanatory purposes and are not actually meant to depict any particular location, just my experience in having to use those CPC outlooks.
