What kind of ammo do you guys use in your varmint guns? Mainly coyotes and Prairie dogs. I have a .243 my comfortable range right now is out to 300yds on varmints. I've been buying and shooting some hsm 75g vmax @$24 a box and wondering if cheaper bullets seem to shoot well enough to make the switch. If I could shoot 2x as much for the same price I would be much happier. Also whats the lowest grain bullet you would use for effective shots on coyotes at 300yds?

65 grain v max out of my 243 and 55 grain v max outta my ar15. I hand load for both and load them hot. Have killed a couple coyotes at 300 with both guns and both of them only went 18 inches(straight down)

so i have been going cheap and shooting bulk 55gr spire point hornadys that come in the 50 pack. and they tear the crap out of my coyotes, they are certainly dead, but skinning is a pain in the butt with a big hole in them to sew up.. what should i be shooting out of my 22-250 for yotes?

I shoot the cheap winchester 45gr hp out of my 22-250. I have only had one dog so far that has been blown up.

I'm using 52gr bthp match Sierra bullets in my 22-250. No problem killing Coyotes at 300 or even 400 a couple of times.

Via 243 everything gets an 85gn TSX. You're going to have an entrance and an exit but for the most part it's controlled and predictable. Caliber in, ~golf ball out.

Not where I'd like to be
To the OP: Probably anything out of a 243 is going to kill em pretty dead at 300yds and further. I personally like the 87gr Vmax out of my 243 AR. I've dropped them at over 400 yards a few times -- every time I actually hit them at that range anyway. A v-max in any weight should work without blowing up the fur. The 95gr SST is another story...
For prairie dogs, the 243 is a bit spendy to shoot, but a lightweight hollow point (<65 grains) should produce some pretty 'neat' results.

As for the 22-250: I run a 53gr vmax that works nicely. Before my reloading days, I shot the cheap Winchester hollow points too. Those drop coyotes in their tracks and turn prairie dogs into a 'pink mist'.

I'll also throw in my experience with my 223: After shooting 243 and 22-250, the 223 is a huge disappointment. Coyotes tend to run off a bit instead of drop and prairie dogs tend to tip over instead of explode. Recently I've been impressed with the cheap American Eagle 50gr Varmint Tipped loads on both critters.

well after the recent ar15 thread i may be pushing 60 or 65 grain bullets out of an 6x45 (6mm-223) by the time the snow falls again. sounds like a really good caliber from the reading i have done over the last couple days

Thanks for all the info guys. I haven't really looked into it any more yet but found my reloading setup and think I might do some more reloading, it's been a couple years. but that should help lower the cost as I have 2-300 rds of brass already.

The only downside to 6mm varmint bullets is that they are generally more expensive and the light bullets share close BC's with similar weight .224 projectiles, especially when you are doing high volume shooting. I know a guy that swears by reloading match 52 BTHP's and letting them sit on the shelf a year before using them on yotes. That or 6mm 70gr TNT's.

You must be peeking in the window on my loading room. You might as well come on in for a cup of coffee. :D

I only use 55gr. VMAX for coyotes but have had a lot of problems with blow ups this past year, anyone else having that same issue out of their .224's?

Give the 50 V-max a test drive, you will love the boat tail and IMHO is a fur friendly bullet. If you hit em square you will not have an exit hole. Mine chono close to 4K FPS out of my 22-250AI with good accuracy.

4K is pretty wicked, I load mine down to 3150 out of my 250 with 33gr of Varget. Thanks, I'll have to brew up a batch of 50's and see, I lose a lot of velocity with my 18" barrels.
