I wouldn't have one either if my boat didn't come with it. It's a waste of space if there is nobody to talk to , I think they could catch on like the old CB days, OVER.

I've had a handheld model (Uniden?) for 10 years. The battery lasts for more than a year between recharges. Nice "insurance" I guess. Hope I never have to use it. Weather info I get on it used to be really handy before cell phones.

I've got a handheld now, have had a couple of Raymarine units before that. With 2 good antennas and a clear line of sight ~12-15Mi is not out of the question.

Someone that knows more about them can pick a channel, I'm just learning. I'm guessing the FCC and Coast Guard have a set of rules and designated emergency and gossip channels ?

I am guessing line of sight... not near the wattage and no giant antenna.

Maybe the handhelds are false security? :;:huh

I haven't taken the time to look at the specs on them but if you are thinking about hand held make sure they transmit/receive with the same wattage as dash models because they are close to the same price.
