Hey guys been shooting 308's in various configurations for a bit here and thinking of trying a different hunting bullet. Typically i shoot match bullets for plinking (smk's, amax's) and have been using 150 grain Barnes TTSX for hunting and like them but not sure if thats the best choice or not.

What do you guys use? regular old soft points? Ballistic Tips? Lighter TTSX for more velocity? Any opinions out there?

What kind of rifle do you have and what are you planning on hunting?

How are you going to be utilizing the gun for the most part? If strictly a big game rifle I'd opt for the 168's. Can't go wrong with the TTSX. They pack a punch and can handle any North American sized game. If a truck gun for any and all activities, i'd shoot whatever is on sale.

Gun is mainly being used for deer hunting mainly hunt in a stand so shots are less than 400 yards. Current 308 i am playing with is a Howa 1500 22" barrel, bedded in a bansner stock, with fixed 6x scope on it weighs about 7.5 lbs loaded.

Clay are you talking about hunting with the smk or amax or staing with the TTSX?

Barnes, because they're as predictable as death and taxes.

Last deer I shot with my 308 I used 110TTSX at over 300 yards and it worked great.

Shot everything you mentioned. I like long range so ballistic coefficient is important to me. I recently switched to the 178 ELD-X by Hornady. They shoot great, but I have not put them to the test yet on game. I guess no one has they just came out. Hard to find, but I picked up a couple boxes in Montana, and a couple of boxes from Midway USA.

I don't have a 308, but I hunt with both a 300 Savage and a 30-06 so I have the 308 bracketed. Use whatever is accurate in your rifle and gives you confidence. At 308 velocities, ordinary cup and core bullets perform well on deer and black bear. Remember since the 308/30-06 are the most popular 30 calibers in the market, most 30 caliber bullets are designed to work well at those velocities. A premium bullet may be advised on larger game, but the additional expense is wasted on deer.

130gr TTSX with Ramshot TAC @ 3200fps has been my meal ticket for a number of years now.

.308 Winchester?!...

Yes Sir....I think people shooting the 110gr TTSX's get closer to 3350....but the 130gr just shoots so well out of my rifle, I never had the desire / need to try them.

Hard to argue 130's as a wrong choice after buddies wife whistled 2 of those through a moose also via 308win and then it died in place.
