Morel Mushrooms

Finally got out tonight for a little bit and was able to find a few. Now I need to find a good recipe for them.

Clean well, slice lengthwise to inspect/clean inside too (ants/sand sometimes), maybe sprinkle with little flour (optional), salt, pepper, sauté to golden in butter.

Eat plain or on top of some cheddar cheese burgers. Yum.

Scrambled eggs with fried morels chunked up in them is simply great - with plain buttered toast as the side. Toast plate!

Hint: cut them cleanly off at the base next time. Dirt/sand is a mortal enemy of morel dining.

I went out yesterday for 3 hours, checked 2 different spots where I have found them before and didnt find a single one. Wondering if anyone else is having luck? Ground is still kinda cold I think....

Having lived and grown up within a few miles of the Missouri river my whole life, I have never seen one myself, many other types of mushrooms but not morels. Would be awesome to find an area with some.

I went out Friday afternoon, south of Bismarck near the river. They were not thick but I did find enough for a meal. It was very dry compared to previous years. Was kinda marshy very close to where I finally found mine. A lot of ticks!

One thing I heard is when you pick them, carry them in a net bag, like an onion bag. It helps spread them around I guess.

That is what we do them put in a pillow case when we back to the pickup. I did learn one thing yesterday is don't put to many in a bag at one time it tends to crush the bottom ones.

So I found a bunch of mushy/old looking morels in a pasture around some ash trees. Isn't September wayyyyy late to be finding even remnants of these things?

I don't think they could even possibly be morels. They are some other fungus. Pic by chance?

Probably a false morel. They look the same but don't have a hollow center.

I figured You had identified them. But if not then most likely stinkhorns.
