WASHINGTON (CNN) Senate Democrats have ended a 14-plus hour filibuster calling for gun control reform, after Sen. Chris Murphy said he won promises for votes on two measures."It is our understanding ... that we have been given a commitment on a path forward to get votes on the floor of the Senate -- on a measure to assure that those on the terrorist watch list do not get guns and an amendment ... to expand background checks to gun shows and to internet sales," he said in a statement.Other filibusters -- by Sen. Rand Paul in 2015 and Sen. Ted Cruz in 2013 -- helped launch presidential bids, but didn't result in substantive concessions. In that sense, at least, Murphy appears to have notched a victory by earning promises for votes.Murphy held the Senate floor early into Thursday morning, vowing to stay "for as long as I can" until Congress acts on gun control legislation. The Connecticut Democrat, who represented the district that includes Newtown as a House member, said: "I live every single day with the memory of Sandy Hook" Elementary, where 20 children and six adults were gunned down in 2012.The Senate adjourned just before 2:15 a.m. ET."This is one step. The fight is far from over," Murphy tweeted. "But there are millions of voices calling for change. And we cannot stop pushing."His spokesman said Murphy will continue to "hold the floor to push for a vote on amendments to close the terror gap and expand background checks.""I am most of the time around here a team player but I've had enough," Murphy said, noting that his move pushes off all other business on the Senate floor. He continued for more than 14 hours and 50 minutes before yielding the floor. The filibuster follows the deadly shooting at an Orlando gay club where 49 people were killed and and more than 50 others wounded. The gunman Omar Mateen was able to purchase weapons he used in the attack despite having previously been on an FBI terror watch list.Murphy finished his filibuster with a large picture of Dylan Hockley wearing a shirt emblazoned with the Superman logo. Hockley was one of the children killed in the Sandy Hook shooting. He was six years old."What can you do to make Orlando or Sandy Hook never, ever, ever happens again?" Murphy asked his colleagues.Hillary Clinton tweeted her support for the Connecticut Democrat's filibuster, "Some fights are too important to stay silent. Preventing gun violence is one of them. Stand strong @ChrisMurphyCT."Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey was the first Republican to ask Murphy to speak on the issue."I'm of the view that it's time to get something done here," he said, adding that he still has concerns with current proposals about how they address citizens who end up on the watch list erroneously, stressing there should be some "mechanism to challenge status of being on that list."Toomey, who is in a tight re-election race, has been in talks with a gun control group, Everytown for Gun Safety, on a potential compromise bill addressing those on the terror watch list. The group was founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a longtime proponent of expanded background checks and other measures aimed at reducing gun violence.Other Democratic senators came to the floor for the filibuster and continued the push for action on guns."When it comes to our response to the tragedy in Orlando, we are already beginning to see the splintering of America," said Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, one in a parade of Democratic senators who joined Murphy on the Senate floor to maintain his filibuster."One side shouts it was a gun that killed all those people," Warren added. "The other side shouts it wasn't a gun, it was a terrorist that killed all those people. And through all of the shouting, we missed what should be obvious: It was a terrorist with a gun that killed all those people, a terrorist with hate in his heart and a gun in his hand that killed all those people."Vice President Joe Biden, too, lent his support to the filibuster. A Democratic senator from Delaware for 36 years, Biden said in a Wednesday night speech at a Sandy Hook Promise fundraiser -- the group works to prevent gun violence in schools -- that the move means "there's hope" for what appeared to be a stalled effort for tighter restrictions. As the filibuster lit up social media, many gun control advocates cheered on Murphy and his fellow Democrats.Rep. Elizabeth Esty, a Connecticut representative from the other side of Capitol Hill, had a care package for her state's junior senator.New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker tweeted that he was that he was "grateful" for Murphy's leadership after the filibuster.Multiple efforts to craft compromise gun legislation hovered in the wings, as Murphy led his dramatic filibuster into the night.John Cornyn, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, told CNN that he is working with California Democrat Dianne Feinstein on a compromise proposal to address the issue of preventing those posing a terror threat from buying guns."We're working pretty feverishly," Cornyn said. "It's pretty clear Democrats aren't going to let us do anything until we deal with this issue."Cornyn didn't say when a deal could emerge, but said, "We're trying to see if we can find common ground. We both believe that terrorists shouldn't get guns."But Democratic leaders cautioned against an incremental approach on gun measures -- issuing a warning to Cornyn Wednesday."From what I'm told all of the compromises that are proposed by Cornyn are not at all acceptable to any of us who want to see the bill," said Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is in line to be the Senate Democratic leader next year. "All kinds of hoops and ladders you have to jump through to get on the list, makes the list virtually untenable."Moderate Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia announced he was re-introducing background check legislation he had worked on before with Toomey."We're going to draw up the Manchin-Toomey bill, our background check bill, we'll drop it, as of now, it should be being drawn up now. And we think it's the fundamental building block of everything we do," Manchin said Wednesday.

Here's my thoughts . . . should background checks be cleaned up and improved - - - yes, obviously they are not working very well.

Should every gun sold on the internet and at gun shows go through a background check, well I would guess that almost all of them are, most people selling on the internet and at gun shows are dealers and would be required to do so.

I'm sure they are going to want to ban "assault weapons" (whatever that means), which didn't work from 1994-2004 and won't work now either. I think they'd be better off putting resources into mental health. Also, how about holding individuals responsible when mass shootings happen? That last guy's wife knew he was going to shoot people and did nothing. In some of the other ones, parents didn't properly lock up their guns and ammo, and didn't make sure their little psychos were taking their meds, why not hold them accountable?

background checks only do so much, the question is...how do you weed the psychos out?

The obscene use and prescription of these psychotropic mind altering drugs has been the primary cause of a vast majority of the shootings in the last 10-20 years but the drug companies and doctors are not held responsible either. Not any different than the exploding use of Heroin fueled by the over prescription of opioid based pain killers.

Hey, if someone wants to self-identify as a killer, who are we to try to convince him otherwise.

When these teenagers or young men (still living at home) are committing mass murders I'm guessing a decent parent would pick up on some warning signs. There's no way for the government to weed these people out, but many of them aren't purchasing the guns themselves anyways, but rather taking them from parents because they are not responsible gun owners and are shitty parents.

I would agree, if its a child/young adult only so much blame can be placed on a kid, at that point its just bad parenting or a parent not paying attention. I think the other half of this is the generation coming to adult hood now are a bunch of spoiled self-entitled brats who don't know how to handle rejection let alone other social situations and they lash out - apparently violently because they've never been given the coping skills. This is the kind of shit that happens when you try to change all the social norms of a country at one time. Shit goes bananas.

I read an article from the Rolling Stones today (first mistake) written by a professor of constitution law (second mistake) in which he tries to argue that it's time to repeal the 2nd Amendment. He's serious. He thinks it's a "suicide pact" and the only way for us to truly live as a society free of fear is to get rid of the 2nd and ban all guns.

I'd brush it off as one loony going to bat for all the tin-hat wearers, but what worries me is that more and more folks are starting to think this way. I almost think that we need to come up with some sort of gun law, any law, just to feed the bears and keep them at bay. I guess if it came down to enacting something that adds another layer to the purchasing process vs. losing the right to bear arms, well, I'll take the restriction.

I'm not sure what the answer is. If history has taught us anything, a gunman shooting up a schoolroom full of kindergartners resulted in zero new gun laws, so I'm sure this will be the same despite the efforts of the dems in congress.

Then again, I could be wrong. Which happens from time to time. Just ask my wife.

How many millions of people live in the USA? There are going to be many nut cases that fall through the cracks in our system. We are not going to be able to stop them all. Its bad that 49 people lost their lives in Florida, but any country in the middle east would be happy if that's all they lost every day. I think its going to get worse before it gets better because there is no quick fix.

Or you don't budge an inch, and suddenly we're Australia.

- - - Updated - - -

On the other hand, you do pass new tougher gun laws, and some other nut shoots up a new mother's lesbian lemmas class, and suddenly they're screaming for more gun laws. And on and on.

So I see where you're coming from. It's a slippery slope. I'm sure if we stand our ground nothing will happen. It hasn't yet, and doubtful will anytime soon.

That is, unless the Hilldabeast is elected...

I wonder why the lefties in Congress aren't throwing fits and tantrums about all the guns and violence in the movies and video games????? (Personally, I believe SOME kids may get hardened while playing shoot em up, kill em, video games and are unable to differentiate between a game and real life)
At any rate, lefties are silent when it comes to the 1st amendment????...as they should...although I believe the biggest reason for that is most of the movie industry is in far left California.

There is only 2 ways this crap stops: 1. everyone becomes nice again (unlikely), 2. more people are able to defend themselves to where a shooter is actually concerned that someone else might be packing and take him out. (my preference) If #2 happens, then shooter changes tactics and becomes a bomber because you can't stop evil 100%.....but you can slow it down.

on post #12?

#9 I think. Doesn't matter. You try to show both sides of an argument and suddenly people label you a Dem or liberal lover.

And people say the media is biased. Pfft. Pathetic.

No. 2 was my immediate reaction after Sandy Hook. I said something on FB along the lines of, "I hope my kids, when they're in school, have the benefit of being protected." Employer at that time (a nonprofit hunting/conservation organization) didn't take kindly to that stance and "strongly suggested" I delete that post in case it made the org look back.

Man am I glad I don't work for them anymore.

The magnitude of STUPIDITY being presented by the Gun Control Nazis in congress and the liberal media is staggering. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results!! Pretty sure there were several gun laws already broken/ignored/scoffed at by this demon of a man so I fail to see how more gun laws will prevent a person with similar beliefs from repeating this somewhere else. Gun Free Zones are nothing more than "Bulls-eyes" for evil people looking to do evil deeds. During the planning process, these COWARDS fear the unknown element when anyone close to the target may be able to defend themselves, thus preventing these evil people from accomplishing their goals. This FEAR, results in them SELECTING a different and softer target to attack. Making the ENTIRE NATION a soft target will only encourage our enemies to continue slaughtering us. If these people have trouble getting guns, they will make/use explosives (yes a person can manufacture explosives), or a truck (through a crowded market), or gasoline (fire bomb), or knives, or, or, or. Each of these has been used in a terrorist attack someplace in the world. All one has to do is look at the tactics and methods used by these bastards in "Gun Free Countries" across the world. Gun control legislation, or any kind of legislation for that matter, WILL NOT STOP THESE PEOPLE. These people DON'T CARE about any of our laws!!!!!!!! Why is it so hard for people to understand this. The evidence for this is OVERWHELMING and readily available.

Definitely a valid argument. I mean, it's pretty darn hard to get/own a gun in France, and look what a handful of determined terrorists have managed to do there.
