I'm in the market for an AR. I don't have an whole lot of knowledge or experience with these guns but would like to buy one. I've done a little bit of research but any testimonials of 1st hand experience would be great. I'm comfortable spending $1500 on just the gun. 2k at the most if it is really something special. Of course a cheaper but quality rifle would be just fine too.

Custom built or factory for 1st gun?

Brands, Barrel finish, caliber, FF rail, carbine, mid or rifle length, etc.

Any advice will be great

Thanks

Yep, need to know your intentions. An AR can be many different things.
Many will tell you to build your own so you get everything you want, but that can be overwhelming for newcomers. As for factory guns, I would look closely at the Huldra Mark IV 5.56 Tactical Elite they have a Fleet Farm. I don't own one, but they seem to have most of the same parts that I used to build my last one. My one general recommendation would be to go with a piston-driven system if possible.

My son and I both have Wyndom Weaponry WW15's and love em. $800 or so. Can't beat em for that price.

I was just going to ask about these. Wondering if anyone has one and what they think of them. Is that ammo readily available and cheap?

Get ready. This is super addicting. Take a look at palmettostatearmory.com for your lowers and jsesurplus.com for your uppers. Pin them together and go. You'll learn as you go. You can easily start out keeping them under $550 for the basic essentials. I've built a 24" stainless bull barrel for $600 using "blemished" parts that I cant find anything wrong with.

Dumb question here . . . can you shoot 223 our of a 5.56 chambered rifle? Not only can you, but is it safe, etc.

As others have stated it really does just depend on what you are intending to use the gun for. I bought my gun the day after sandy hook happened, mainly because I didn't have one and I figured no time better than the present to buy one. It sat in my gun safe for about a year before I actually did anything with it.
It's a DPMS with a 16" barrel that cost me $600 at scheels. Yes it was about the most basic gun one could buy, but it was the last one they had in the store and there were other people waiting for their background checks to clear so they could buy it.... I walked in with my conceal carry license and then walked out with the gun. I ended up actually changing a lot of stuff on it. I swapped out the factory 16" barrel for a 20" Yankee Hill 1:7 twist barrel. I swapped the nasty trigger that came in it for a CMC 3# trigger assembly. I then swapped out all the cheap ass plastic furniture for a Magpul MOE rifle stock, and a Yankee Hill Rifle length forend. All total I'm into my gun for about $1200 not including my scope. The best group I've achieved with it at 100 yards off a bench is .47" shooting 77grain SMK's. It will also shoot 55 grain Hornady V-max bullets but not quite as accurate.

One option to consider is go to the next gun show in Minot and hit up the Nodak Arms booth. Last summer one of my buddies picked up an AR that they built. If i remember right he ended up paying around $500 and that included a red dot site, a couple clips, and I think 50 rounds of their ammo. He likes the hell out of it.
My next AR will be either a home built AR or I will go in and have Nodak build one. I've got parts left from modding my current AR that I will use towards my next one.

I certainly wouldn't wait till November. I guarantee if the Hildabeast gets elected it will be post Sandy Hook all over again. Ammo and gun helves will be empty once again.

Prices are creeping up on some things and availability of a few things is becoming tighter, but there are still deals to be had... image.jpg(Settle down, you won't likely find one.) Gotta know when/where/what you're looking for and what isn't worth buying. Most ARs are of good quality but few are worth what you pay for them. If you buy the cheapest thing on the shelf or the thing that's featured in the email or circular you are going to be stuck with what's left, not what's worth the price.- - - Updated - - -There will be Independence Day sales. Look for things like 10% off all orders or free shipping. The "featured" rifle is often of lesser quality. (But again, there are way more quality ARs out there than there are bad.)

Nothing wrong with DPMS or S&W from a store, i have put together several AR's. last one was a 22-250 that I kept old school, used peep sight and front sight tower, A2 stock, good shooter. If you build one, keep the first one simple and you will be hooked, everything you need to know is on the internet

so, i finally joined the club. i have 1000+ rounds of .223 and figured i should finally get a gun to go with it. ;) anyway, i got sick of kicking tires, talking to gun stores and reading til my head hurt online. so, i decided i was just going to bite the bullet and "build" my first one and try to keep it cheap just to wet my feet. i checked out PSA and got a complete upper and lower that were listed as "daily deals" yesterday. saved $90 on the upper. PSA 20", 1:7, 5.56, with BCG and CH. i think i saved $80 (its now out of stock. so, i can't tell what the original price was) on a complete MOE plus lower. so, i was all in for $555 including shipping to a local FFL friend. i guess i still need mounts, optics and a magazine or two. question for you fellas who have done this before... the reviews online for both items were pretty much all 5 star. but, i am leery of "deals". should a person be concerned with items offered up as deals on PSA? how about PSA in general? they weren't listed as blemished. thanks.

I have a Rock River AR, it is a fun gun to shoot, but has sat in the safe for over a year now, as I mainly use my .204 on little critters now.

Seemed like I needed one pretty bad, and now use it rarely. $2000 sitting in the safe I guess is better than $2000 sitting in the casino or bar.
