I have been kicking around the idea of a 257 Weatherby.

I am trying am debating between the new Weatherby Vangard Accumarck and the Remington CDL Stainless Fluted in 257 Weatherby. Vangard has 24" barrel versus the Remington's 26" barrel. But, the Vanguard is guaranteed sub moa and I have heard from some that Remington's quality and accuracy have been lacking. Do I loss that much with a 24" barrel from the 26".

Undecided, any thoughts?

I've been kicking around the idea of picking up a vanguard accumark myself also. I Can't give you any comparison between the Remington and weatherby rifles but I can tell you that I have a weatherby vanguard s2 in 257 wby and I love it. It shoots lights out. Plus it was won in a raffle so it only cost me $20(kinda) at least that's what I keep telling myself. Makes me feel better.

You wont loose anything between 2" of barrel. At least, not in that caliber, its negligible. I would be more concerned with which of the two rifles you prefer, and buy that one. If you reload, than it doesn't matter which on of the two you buy as you will find a load that will work. I have heard great things about the sub MOA guns from Weatherby.

I currently have a Remington CDL 257 Weatherby which I sold the factory stock and put an HS Precision stock on it. I had a Weatherby Stainless Vanguard in a 257 before that. Both rifles shot good but the Remington better. The weatherby shot 3/4 in with 100 grain tsx and 110 accubonds. The Remington shoots 117 sierra game kings and 115 partitions at 1/2 in but the accuracy holds better at longer distances. You will want to get a 26 in tube in order to burn all that powder and get max velocity out of your load. With a 24 in tube you will basically have 25-06 velocities. As most factory guns come with junky triggers both the vanguard and the rem are in need of a timney. I see the big reason for Remingtons not shooting out of the box right now is the 2 biggest factors that can be fixed fairly cheap which is get rid of that POS x-mark trigger and glass bed your stock or buy a stock with an aluminum bedding block in it and they will shoot. One thing to remember when you buy a Remington there are readily available after-market and factory parts and accessories as well as every gunsmith likes working with Remington actions when they custom build a rifle.

Since speed is not the issue, I'd choose the 24 for less bbl whip. Probably not that much less, but what I'd do.

Have you seen this on a chronograph? My 25" Lilja runs 100's @ 3800+.

Wow that is taking the Roy to the limit. When I ran the Vanguard on the chronograph it was 150 fps slower than the Remington with same load. Some guns it may not matter some it does. I have seen custom guns with same actions, barrel, barrel length and same reamer used that have had quite a difference in velocity using the same load. I would believe that it all has to do with the pressure created. I have a 20 vartarg with a 20 in Hart barrel that is all that is needed for max velocity. I also have a 6 dasher that has a 26 in Douglas barrel that has 4 inches more than it needs.

Speed is also determined by the twist of the barrel. A 22-250 with a 1-14 will be 200-400 FPS faster than a 1-10 shooting the same load. And everything is the same barrel length and bullet weight and powder.

I would have to see that to believe it. I have shot a 257 WBY for many yrs and can never get that speed.

I went to a 25-300 WBY and can push a 100 gr at 4100FPS. A 25-300 is a 300 WBY necked down to a 25 caliber. It has a 26 inch 1-10 twist PacNor barrel

Actually I was mistaken, I was going from memory and tonight ran across my notes for that rifle. Avg velocity is 3825 with an ES/SD of 27/8 respectively.
