[h=1]Oregon rancher receives government request to survey his property – read his brilliant response[/h]by Mark Meckler

So many people cave in and bend over backwards to accommodate the most ridiculous requests of federal and state governments, but this story is a reminder of how we all should respond when bureaucrats come knocking at our doors.
Recently, Oregon ranchers Larry and Amanda Anderson received a letter by the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife asking for permission to survey their land in order to track a nearly endangered species. The letter requested use of the landowners’ creek to document the amphibian life represented, specifically the foothill yellow-legged frog which is noted to have recently declined in population. If the Anderson’s agreed to give the department access, they were ensured as being responsible for “the conservation of this important species.”
But the Andersons weren’t exactly interested and noticed an opportunity to turn the tables on the request and apply a little “Golden Rule” justice, or at least doing unto the government as is so often done unto them.
The Andersons constructed one of the best come-back letters of all time. The only way to truly appreciate it is to read it in its entirety:
Dear Mr. Niemela:
Thank you for your inquiry regarding accessing our property to survey for the yellow-legged frog. We may be able to help you out with this matter.
We have divided our 2.26 acres into 75 equal survey units with a draw tag for each unit. Application fees are only $8.00 per unit after you purchase the “Frog Survey License” ($120.00 resident / $180.00 Non-Resident). You will also need to obtain a “Frog Habitat” parking permit ($10.00 per vehicle). You will also need an “Invasive Species” stamp ($15.00 for the first vehicle and $5.00 for each add’l vehicle) You will also want to register at the Check Station to have your vehicle inspected for non-native plant life prior to entering our property. There is also a Day Use fee, $5.00 per vehicle.
If you are successful in the Draw you will be notified two weeks in advance so you can make necessary plans and purchase your “Creek Habitat” stamp. ($18.00 Resident / $140.00 Non-Resident). Survey units open between 8am and 3pm but you cannot commence survey until 9am and must cease all survey activity by 1pm.
Survey Gear can only include a net with a 2″ diameter made of 100% organic cotton netting with no longer than an 18″ handle, non-weighted and no deeper than 6′ from net frame to bottom of net. Handles can only be made of BPA-free plastics or wooden handles. After 1pm you can use a net with a 3″ diameter if you purchase the “Frog Net Endorsement” ($75.00 Resident / $250 Non-Resident). Any frogs captured that are released will need to be released with an approved release device back into the environment unharmed.
As of June 1, we are offering draw tags for our “Premium Survey” units and application is again only $8.00 per application. However, all fees can be waived if you can verify Native Indian Tribal rights and status.
You will also need to provide evidence of successful completion of “Frog Surveys and You” comprehensive course on frog identification, safe handling practices, and self-defense strategies for frog attacks. This course is offered online through an accredited program for a nominal fee of $750.00.
Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you. Otherwise, we decline your access to our property but appreciate your inquiry.
Sincerely,
Larry & Amanda Anderson

Pure genius and a testament to the Anderson’s resolve to stand up to an intrusive government.

I have read the article where they talk about how the landowner wrote this tongue in cheek. In fact they have a good working relationship with the Oregon DNR.

No doubt, they like to make examples of guys like this. Gordon Kahl wasn't an evil guy either.

Yeah. right up until the part where he didnt want to pay his taxes like a responsible citizen, went to prison and then killed three people.

Yeah. right up until the part where he didnt want to pay his taxes like a responsible citizen, went to prison and then killed three people.

except he did actually pay his taxes but he filled out a form that made it so the government couldn't actually use his tax money and put it in limbo and then he was attacked by the IRS because he was teaching other people about it

Tax Deadline

With the arrival of the three shipments of British East India Company tea to Boston, the tax on tea, which had been implemented with the passing of the 1767 Townshend Revenue Act, had to be paid the moment the tea was unloaded from the Beaver, Dartmouth, and Eleanor. The absolute deadline for payment of the tax was twenty days after the arrival of the tea. If the tax was not paid within the twenty days following the ships’ arrival, the ships and their cargoes of British East India Company Tea would be seized by authorities. The deadline to pay the tax on the tea the Dartmouth delivered to Boston was December 17. Immediately following the arrival of the Dartmouth at the end of November 1773, pamphlets distributed by the Sons of Liberty appeared throughout the streets of Boston proclaiming, “Friends! Brethren! Countrymen! That worst of Plagues, the detested tea shipped for this port by the East India Company, is now arrived in the Harbor; the hour of destruction, or manly opposition to the machinations of Tyranny stares you in the Face…” For the twenty days following the arrival of the Dartmouth, meetings occurred on a daily basis throughout Boston at locations such as the Green Dragon Tavern, Faneuil Hall, and Old South Meeting House to discuss what was to be done about the shipments of “detested tea”. The Sons of Liberty, led by Samuel Adams, was responsible for organizing the Boston Tea Party.

So you want to throw a bunch of coffee grounds into the Mighty Mo to protest taxes? Is that what I'm hearing?

How would we pay your farm subsidies without taxes?

Taking a pretty big jump there ds.

Holding up the ideals of limited Federalism those that created this nation might be a good idea though.

At what point would YOU throw a crate of tea into the Missouri to protest your taxes?

Perhaps when the govt seizes your deeded private property you have owned for generations for not paying their taxes?

The point here is while lampooning the govt in this letter, sadly it is funny because of the truth behind it.

One question, at what point does it become impossible to regain(or keep if you think we have not yet lost it) control of this Federal govt?

We are not far from accepting what we fought independence from for fear we will be branded, chastized or jailed.

Incrementally we are being forced to accept what the Federal govt deems we must.

How would we pay your farm subsidies without taxes?

We wouldn;t. And that would not bother me in the least. Anyone that thinks framing would not adjust and continue without these govt payments does not understand the concept of free markets.

We would not be able to fund this nations food security programs either.

Stop and think about that for a moment.

But now suddenly you take this to mean NO taxes?

Where did you get that from fuzzy?

Has anyone advocated NO taxes?

Or are you simply making that up?

If you are such an advocate of these free markets then you should be the first one stepping away from the government teet and start adapting. But that government money is just too hard to go without right?

Indeed it is when a lender requires participation for operating funds. I wish I was independently wealthy and did not have to borrow monies to operate.

It is why I enjoy ranching much more than farming.

But then the govt would not be able to control what happens on private lands. (perhaps you do not understand the basis of a govt "takings" and what our Constitution speaks of regarding it)

And if they can not control what happens on those lands producing this nations food they could not have a national food security program.

And if they did not have a national food security program and free markets dictated what you pay for your groceries perhaps you would be concerned about things you are free not to worry about such as cost availability and safety of your food.

So perhaps we can have a discussion about this Federal govts actions so that they might actually be addressed without dragging the old "head in the mailbox" dialogue into it.

If you wish to engage in that fools talk, at least own what it provides for you as well. Because indeed ALL those Federal dollars just go under the mattress or in a can in the back yard and not to businesses multitudes of people make their livings in.

Or maybe we can just get a laugh out of a funny post and enjoy the day.

Back out to combine 6 vom durum no one wants to buy. Glad we spent $30,000 spraying on fungicide twice or it might be higher and no one would still want to buy it.

Say fuzzy you want to buy some, you could make your own pasta instead of buying that Velveeta Cheese and macaroni. But then you would need the cow too. :)
