Well got back from Idaho late friday night and it was one of the best experiences of my life. No elk were had but we seen some and learned alot about elk and about gear in the mountains. i will add a bunch of pics and kinda go through what we thought about our gear.
Packs everyone was running and eberlestock i had the j34 and it is now sold way to heavy to start and it was comfortable for a while and then it pulled on the shoulders. Kifaru is getting a call today.
Combination of sitka and kuiu clothing between the four of us and it all performed as expected worth every penny. we had unusally wet conditions and the fast drying of both were nice.
Socks i wore the same pair of Darn Tough socks every day just to test them out was going to switch out when they got funky but they never did between them and first lite socks i will never own a pair of cotton socks again. I also wore the same pair of first lite bottoms for 6 of the 7 days and they smelled like brand new when done. I wanted to put stuff to the test as next time i will be spiking out for multiple days.
Boots i had meindel ultra light hunters 400 gram insulated and so did another guy and then a pair of red wings and danners. My meindels perfromed great the red wings were ok. The danners were on the brink of giving heal blisters but leuka tape was added to his heals and all was good. That leuka tape is a god send.
Next time i will be able to spike out for a few days once elk are found we started to get it figured out and at about 5 miles in is where we started seeing them. Seek out side or kifaru shelter with an ultra lite wood stove will be going.
Elevation was not real high the highest we got was 6700 feet but it was a rugged as it gets we were just east of hells canyon(the deppest canyon in the us) and now i see why no one gives specifics when out in the mountains as we worked out ass of to find where elk live out there. Seeing elk move through the trees with little to no effort was amazing
I left there with the realization that any elk shot on and OTC tag diy is an accomplishment and a trophy. I will be back and planning has already started for next year
