Looking to get a new rifle-primarily whitetail, been looking online and although brand is up in the air I'm considering the candidates for caliber to be 25-06, 270, or a 7mm. Just looking for input on any experience with any and suggestions as what is probably a better go to?? I know this may end up as a vexilar vs marcum type argument but would love some input.

I don't reload, I guess that's probably why I question the difference...ammo option/availability, I myself am leaning towards the 25-06 due to what I read it is obviously a very manageable recoil but has a good heavy hit to it, then again from what I read

I like the 25-06. I own a couple you can never have to many

25-06 is pretty flat shooting and widely available ammo. Same goes for .270. With that, I'll suggest a .270 WSM

Don't know why people like slow quarter bore. 257 Roy is interesting. Just go 7 mag or 7-08 and be done with it.

In front.
7m08. I'd chase the short/quick action and lighter rifle all day long. Also, I don't like bark or recoil. Used to shoot 7 mag, then relized 08 was only, something like, 150 fps slower (going off memory here), lighter, quieter, etc etc

I have used numerous sizes of rifles for white tails. I've settled on a 270 and love it. I have a 7mm and I feel that is too much gun for white tails and the ammo has gone nuts in price. But I keep it in case I hunt elk. Awesome gun for that.

I have so much confidence in my 25-06. When I point it at an animal, I just assume it will be dead shortly. I shoot 117 grain Federal factory ammo. It just plain works for me.

I used to shoot a 25-06 and really liked the caliber but wanted a little heavier grain bullet for knockdown power and less wind drift. 1 went to a 270 shortmag using 140gr accubond bullets, with great success on deer and a few Elk.

I just got myself a 6.5 Creedmoor last week. I like it a lot and killed my first buck with it today. It's got about 50 more to go before it surpasses the trusty .243 in kills. But, gonna try my best.

All three of your calibers will definitely kill whitetail. I have shot all three but 7mm is the one I have used for deer (shooting a 6.5-284 latly). In my opinion if you are thinking elk is a possibility I would suggest 270 or 7mm or as mentioned 7m-08.
My 7mm rem mag kicks pretty good with 140gr Barnes but I don't really notice the recoil unless I plan on shooting a box of shells in one sitting, hunting I don't even feel it.

Is cost of ammunition a concern? Will you target shoot frequently? How far will you generally be shooting?

Probably not a concern with the amount it would be shot, non would go to the range with a 100 rounds or anything like that, not too uncommon to be looking at 300-400 yards in the open where we hunt, that's where the 30-06 is a little less desirable, which I would have for elk possibility if I had to

It's not as fun and sexy as a .25-06, 7mm-08, .270, etc......but the good old .308 is all the gun I need. 130gr TTSX @ 3200fps will kill me all the whitetail, antelope, and muley (someday) that I want. If I ever step up to elk or moose I have an option of a 200gr TTSX @ 2550fps that'll kill a elk/moose with no issues at all, with a well placed shot, out to 400 yards or more. Easy to reload, you can find cheap bulk ammo to practice with.

Looks like you don't reload, so look at the cost of .308 ammo (and options) versus a .25-06, 7mm-08, 6.5 credmore, .284, etc. (I haven't purchased rifle ammo for 10+ years, so maybe the gap has closed).
