Gas, Equipment, supplies, and all the other expenses will take 70% of that 52000. Trapping isn't an easy way to make money. 10 a week sustained catch rates require you travel to new habitats when you clear out an area. Pretty soon you are putting on 100's of miles a day to catch the same # of dogs.

Get a Dr's note saying I need more fresh air, take a 6-12 weeks off work and kill a couple hundred. Even then, that'd be a real challenge.

If I was guaranteed $100 a piece and did it full time I could make a very comfortable living. That is untill a year like this, but then a guy could get into snow removal.

My Dad and quit a few of the neighbors did it and told stories about it so I did it full time with $70 fox and made a hell of a living , It was so luxurious that I quit school, Then the old mans gas money dried up and I ended up in the oilfield. It was fun while it lasted.

when was this Davey I am thinking 80's mink were over a hundred stretched back in mid to late 80, coyotes 80-100 beavers 40-65 racoon 30- 50 badger 10-30 skunk 1 muskrat 5 fox 50-75 dad made good money trapping and i liked to ride out with him when he checked his lines.
I can still remember how he set traps up till this day and that was 30 years ago. Yes it was hard work for sure but the mink was the hardest to trap for. Coyote second

PS thats why shelter belts were the ideal spots to set traps because they were less likely to get blown over with snow.

I wouldn't be able to make it work as a full time year round but in the winter months. Say November to march I would do fairly well. But I don't work much in the winter as it is and wouldn't need anymore than 20 per month to do well

This is exactly why it would be hard to do, I do know a few guys that I know could make it happen BUT not your average guy!

I also enjoyed the days of good prices for fur, but as your example shows, it wasn't done with just coyote and competition was fierce along with trap and fur theft.

I actually found mink fairly easy to trap, but a smart old coyote could drive me nuts.

Most we ever got for fox was $75. untouched. That was darn good money and had a great winter. Bought a new 79 Ford Bronco and a new snowmobile that winter and had money left over.

I know this is little of nm a political opinion but wouldn't be awesome if this administration could lift current embargoes against countries who want to buy pelts from us.

If you could tell everybody else to not chase them, you might have a chance. Every Tom, Dick and Harry would be after them here and there.

trapping is not a way to make a lot of money. Its a way to have fun and hopefully make a little money doing it.

My buddy in MT traps bobcats. Now that's a way to make money.

Unfortunately Montana has zone quotas on bobcats, season closes before you could make any real living at it.

He trapped 36 last year. Many brought $500 a piece

He sets up a wall tent for 3 weeks and runs a trap line. I went out with him last year. fun times.
