Dad drew North Dakota moose tag, and figures to draw his Colorado elk tag this year. He shoots a Browning Bar 7mm Rem. Mag. Which bullet should I load up for him? Currently he uses 120gr. Barnes TTSX's for deer. I'm thinking the moose may be a fairly close shot, but the elk could be out to 500 yards.

I shoot berger 168s from my 7mag and in my experience they are the best bullet out there for 7mag. 168's will work well for both moose and elk and they are great on deer as well.

I don't remember what my recipe is for my handloads, if you want it shoot me a message and I'll pm it to ya. It's definately not a barrel burner, but it works very well for me.

If its accurate for you, Id stick with the same bullet for moose at least, from what Ive heard, its basically like shooting a cow for many people. Elk maybe go up to a 140 but its probably not necessary.

I shoot the same out my bolt action rifle, but I'm afraid they won't work well with his short magazine capacity.

My old man and grandpa shoot the same gun. We've never been into reloading shells so only factory loads through both of the guns. I want to say they shoot 140gr bullets and have killed a lot of deer and a number of elk at many distances. I'd think if the gun shoots the 120's well, that would be fine for moose and elk. Hit em mid to upper front shoulder and they ain't going anywhere.

For deer I have been running Barnes 140ttsx and would use them on Elk if it was my only option, Moose might be a little iffy to me personally but if it was a closer shot 140 should do the job. If you have time to experiment maybe look into going up to 150ttsx or maybe even the Barnes 168LRX should do the job for both animals.

I won't use copper because they were developed to sell bullets during a lead ban. #california

I think you should use the same type of magic bullet that was used on Kennedy.

In theory, after penetrating the moose, it should ricochet and head towards Colorado where it will kill his elk too

140's will do the trick for both. I have killed 1 elk with 150 grain nosler portion. That elk was toast.

Some unsolicited advice with larger game---continue to shoot until the target is on the ground.

I shoot a 7mm and don't reload so I would go with either the 140 barnes vort-x tsx or 160gr federal premium nosler partion. They make the barnes vort-x in 160 gr tsx to but I was told with the tsx to shoot a little lighter bullet? I don't know have killed many deer and a couple elk with both them bullets

Moose are a big animal. However, in my experience seeing quite a few shot over the years I don't find them to be particularly tough. You get a bullet in the body and they aren't going to go very far without giving you another shot. Elk may be a hard to kill animal if your first shot isn't where you want it.I would suggest a bullet big enough to leave an exit hole and tough enough to hold together but still spread out and do some damage. Barnes, burgers, Partitions should all meet the bill.
