  1. New Town

Been casting cranks from west of bridge to south of Bear Den, 3 to 10' best. Lots of smaller fish with a few nicer ones thrown in. Best color has been a pink lemonade Flicker Shad from DH Custom Baits. They just can't seem to help themselves.

  2. Red River 6-15-21

Water temperature is nearing 80 this week and many of the fish are now on the nest or getting ready.

Again, this week fishing has been spotty in most areas with lack of current to hold fish and make them predictable. Most sections of the river are in or nearing spawn. Numbers of smaller fish are being reported with a few bigger fish mixed in. This is not what many anglers like to hear but it’s that time of year. The Drayton stretch is still producing pre spawn fish more than some other areas but is also showing signs of spawning fish. Best baits have been fresh to attract hunting ...

With incredibly hot temperatures over the weekend and to present the catfish are heading to the nest. I have started seeing males protecting the nests and others acting like they are looking for a nest. The bad news is the bite will slow. The good news is it looks to stay hot hurrying the spawn up.

Get ready for some catfish shock. The forecast is everything we don’t want. Nice stable comfortable weather right to nasty hot. Water temps will be rising very fast into the 70s and shocking the fish for a few days and then I suspect the spawn will be close behind.

In the meantime get out and take advantage of what we have left of the prespawn. The water levels in the Drayton area are back to low in step with the rest of the Red River. The fish feeding in the faster water for now which I expect to slow down the early part of next week after the heat. Sit times have been 15-20 minutes ...

  5. Hook to the River

We put in at Parshall, poked around the hook, then the Pouch area, and the Independence Point area, but had trouble getting the fish to go, so we worked our way up river. We eventually got into some fish, but not until we got to the Huntsalong/Reunion Bay area. We were trolling jigs, and trolling lindy's with minnows. Both produced fish. We found them in the 25 fow range. It was pretty windy where we were, so we ended up moving at .8 to sometimes over a mile per hour.
Not the best day ever, but I think we managed a dozen 'eyes or so, a handful of white bass, a few pike, 3 nice catfish, ...

  6. Lake Oahe Water Conditions

Just got back from Beaver Bay area and the water looks like chocolate milk. Wonder if it will clear up soon because the bite is OFF for now. Any other reports on water condition on the river system?

It’s been a wild week. We were blessed with rains that gave the fish a fresh drink. Water levels remain seriously low from Oslo to the south and heavy rains brought Drayton up nearly four feet and it is quickly falling now. The cool temperatures have brought water temperatures from about 68 to the low 60s. The forecast now looks to be cool for the next days. This is not a bad thing as it will prolong the prespawn bite.

Catfish have been a bit confused with all the weather and are hanging out in slower current areas and even very shallow. Sit times have been tough to nail down but ...

The rifle range boat ramp is closed. They had some equipment in there yesterday but was to far away to see what was going on.

The water temperatures have really come up the past few days. Some sections of river are producing fish better than others. Most areas are fishing like it is mid-summer as the lack of current seems to have not sparked the catfish to make their annual upstream migration. The best spots to locate big fish have been deeper water in the middle of the channel. Move fairly quickly not staying more than 20-30 minutes unless you are on fish.

The best bait has been goldeye with sucker coming in second. There has been a lot of the picking and pecking still so use smaller baits to ensure the ...

The water temperature has stayed fairly stable all week and is beginning to go up again with this week’s warm up. The water temperature as of this writing is 57. In some sections of the river this has the fish beginning to kick into high gear and in other sections it really has not made a big difference yet. It may be that because the river is extremely low and the lack of current is not spurring the upstream migration that we are used to most springs.

The past week fishing in deeper faster water has been the key. We still have to sort through quite a few little ones to get to the ...
