Work sharp sharpener

So I borrowed my dads work sharp to being life back into a few blades. Buck knives turned out great and even worked on some kitchen knives. Decided to put my pocket knife through it and now I have a butter knife tip. I know I read that some others have done this. So, any of you guys, that are willing to admit it, brought that tip back from the blunt graveyard?

You need to stop the blade tip right at the edge of the belt. Once you start pulling it onto the belt the belt "wraps around it" taking off excess tip material because all the tension/abrasion is focused on the tip. I drew pics on FBO.

sadly you have to remove a lot of material to get the tip back. Maybe pay $5 to local sharpener dude to get it back... Then never pull a tip past the belt edge again.

I've taken my finishing stone and just made tiny circles with the knife tip and brought some back, don't know about butter knife tip though.

I'll post pics tomorrow. It's probably not as bad as I described. I have a pretty shitty stone though. I'll give it a try tomorrow night.

Take a little material off the top of the blade until you have a tip again.

I busted the tip off one of my deer hunting knive once....just took it to a guy who sharpens knifes and he put a tip back on it

When I need to do something like this I use the fine stone on my bench grinder and very lightly drag the blade across the stone (so the blade doesn't get hot and lose it's temper) as many times as needed and after every time I submerse the blade in cold water to lower the temperature of the blade. I have put new points on knives that have had a broken point and I have taken the serrated edge off a 10 inch slicing knife to make it a meat slicing knife (prime rib) that I can re-sharpen. I use an Accusharp to manually sharpen knifes. Both systems work great.

I got a little Smith's diamond pocket hone with a grove cut down the middle for this situation. Doesn't take that long to fix.

I have used one of these, but I am pretty naïve in the art that is knife sharpening.

Disclosure: I am not an expert in knife sharpening! But I am fairly well versed in what not to do with a worksharp. I f'd one or two knives up when I first bought it. Not horrible mind you, just no longer needle pointy - a quality I don't find very useful anyway to be honest with you.

p.s. be moving instantly when the knife first goes onto the belt - a couple knives of mine have a shallow indent near the heel where the belt spent more time... thus removing more material.

p.p.s. in general that is the knock on workshop - excessive metal removal

I'm going to find some aftermarket belts that are "in between" the medium and fine grit belts. The medium removes metal too quickly - the fine is for polishing the edge (and wears out or fills up with metal quickly) - one or two in between would allow re-sharpening with less metal loss

pic shows up there now - sometimes there is a delay - maybe until/unless V reviews it to make sure it passes inspection?

I just bought new grit sizes direct from worksharp. I'm moving to a grade in between the medium and fine that ship with the original worksharp... so as to reduce the metal consuming tendency of the medium grade (220) that ships with the original worksharp.

The "Ken Onion" version of worksharp looks even better - and comes with more grades.

plus it's 3/4" wide - a whopping 50% more belt! :;:rockit

Boy does that green belt remove material. I had a couple rock/gravel nicks in a SS prop. It didn't take long to buff out the stainless edges.

Oh boy, you are only supposed to use that belt for mower blades and other large "tools"! Brown belt is for knives to start and purple to finish.

Reading the directions isn't necessarily a big highlight of abilities. The rest of the knife is VERY sharp though.
