  1. Stump Lake 5/1/16

Had to get out in the boat and give it a try, but we probably should have stayed in town and just fished the Red River.

Water temps ranged from 45 to 47 degrees in the main lake with some temps approaching 50 in a shallow bay later in the afternoon.

Needless to say we got skunked on the walleye, but did manage a few northern in the shallow bay. We were probably just a week too early.

  2. Lake Winnipeg 2/20/16

Ice conditions are perfect up there right now. At this point I don't see any problems going into late March unless the shore ice really deteriorates. Extensions on the auger are required. Snow is minimal and fairly compact, we didn't have any problems going anywhere we wanted on the ATV's with tires. In fact, you could go a lot of places up to the first major pressure ridge by truck, although we did see people stuck here and there. This weekend the fishing was pretty tough for big fish, although I did hook into a fat 29 incher on Saturday...reminded me of a Devils Lake perch the thing was so round. ...
  3. Stump Lake 6/27

Just like the rest of the Devil's Lake area the fishing is on fire right now. Me and a buddy drove there from GF Saturday morning and were done with our limit by 10:30. We fished catch-and-release for a little while and then went and checked out some stuff on the structure scan for kicks (I'll make a post of a couple cool pictures).

We were pulling spinners with leaches in an old road ditch at about 17 feet. Perfect 16-17" eaters. The silver spinner was the best. When we got to the cleaning station some people were cleaning some hogs...they said they came from spinners in ...

  4. West Battle Lake (MN Musky Opener)

Unfortunately we did not boat any muskies during the opening weekend. Saturday we were met with a bit of a cold front and switching winds, followed by spotty rain and a late afternoon drenching of almost 2 inches. Sunday started off decent but the winds picked up quite a bit shortly thereafter making if difficult to fish the spots the way we wanted. Afternoon popcorn thunderstorms did not help.

Water temps ranged from 59 to 66, but no difference in action. Had around 8 follows for the weekend, most around that 40" mark, a couple in the upper 40's, no giants. Best action ...
  5. Cold & Windy Stump Lake

A friend and I went to Stump on Saturday to try our luck, and mostly because I wanted to check out my new Lowrance and my first taste of Structure Scan.

It turned out to be way colder, windier, and rainier than we originally thought, but we stuck it out and got the job done.

We caught a few on minnows lindy-rig style, a few on leaches and spinners, and a few on crawler harnesses. No one particular method was any better than the rest. Water temp was 49-50.

The depth we did the best at was around 12, but it didn't pay to try and troll the contour. Instead ...

  6. Minnesota Walleye Opener, Lake Lida

What a cold front for the opener. At least Saturday was fishable, but Sunday the wind and rain kept everyone off Lida. The wind was from the Northeast at least 25 MPH sustained.

On Saturday at least the fish were biting. The bigger fish were coming from the 10-18 foot range. Also picked up a couple smallmouth from this depth as well. The smaller, eater sized fish (below Lida's 17 inch slot) were all coming from a lot deeper water, 25 to 35 feet. Only used shiners and fished basically lindy-rig style, trolling slowly (.5 MPH).
  7. Lake Lida, Minnesota 5/2/15

Gearing up for the walleye opener but in the meantime the crappies are biting. Main lake water temp is 55 degrees. Back in Bass Harbor where we were catching the crappies the water temp was 63. Using minnows and a 1/16 ouch jig under slip-bobbers. One area would not stay hot very long, had to keep moving to keep on them.
