Slots on pike might work if more than 2% of anglers kept them once in a while. I think I pike fish year round more than anyone on this site, and I cant remember the last time I actually brought home my limit.

I was thinking more like no limit on pike. I doubt it would even make a difference as nobody keeps them except a select few. Let those folks go hog wild.

If they were not such a bitch to clean I'd keep and target them. I have a hard enough time filleting a normal fish let alone those bone filled bastards. As far as taste, they're decent enough to eat. :)

One thing to think about is to use recipes that call for flaked fish. Then a guy can just bake them, take all the bones out and use them in the recipe. Kris Winkelman has some good recipes on Babe's website.

my thoughts exactly, really the only time I keep pike is it somebody else is going to clean it, cuz I just cant figure it out...I do keep them in the spring to pickle, no deboning needed

I really have no issues eating pike (yes cleaning them is somewhat messy). Just take off the backstrap meat and don't even need to hardly worry about the Y bones. They fry up good with cold beer I know that!!

My grandfather taught me the art of boneless pike fillets when I was just a wee lad. Plus we have a thing for pickled pike. Between those methods, there aren't many northerns that get a pass when we fish...

I'm most likely going to give it a go this summer, can't get better if you don't do it i guess. I'm not a fan of pickled anything so that's a pass for me and I may have to try just baking them and pulling bones after - that'd be pretty simple i'd imagine.

He was baited into that reply a little bit. I got the impression he would like to see a slot on walleyes but he never did say outright that's what he wanted to see for pike.

I have a buddy that is always asking for fish -- so last summer we slimed up and kept one box reserved for pike. Its amazing how full that box can get in the course of the day. Yes they are b to clean and I always feel guilty of how much meat goes to waste trying to get around the y-bones and yes I probably do not do it correctly. A little salt and water and those filets get nice and white, I cant help but keep a few for myself.

I dont think NO LIMIT is a good idea, some people will freak out and catch millions of them, especially if allowed for out of state fishermen. Id be ok with it being increased from 3 to 5 tho.... :;:thumbsup

I like to fish for pike and I keep a limit when I catch them.

Usually I just clean them like any other fish and put them in the smoker. After they are smoked it's
easy to pick the bones out. No wasted meat.

Another way I found to cook them was to just cut the head off, gut them and throw em on the grill (oven would work too).
When they are cooked, the skin, backbone and all the other bones just pull out as a unit, leaving just the meat.

If you are gonna keep them, knock em over the head and they won't slime up. They are pretty good out of cold water.

Lycan the limit on pike is already 5 that changed a few years ago. I personally keep all the pike i can ive cleaned hundreds of them now and fry em up at fish frys and nobody can even tell the difference between them and the walleyes. Make the chunks of fish the same size and no questions are asked
