My tornado enjoyment matrices are maxed out. I will need approximately the rest of my life to fully realign them. Never seeing another tornado wreck peoples lives would be just fine with me. Just saying.

I've been looking at different types of shelters since the states latest tornado activity. According to the Enderlin pictures, hiding in the basement would not be a sufficient method to stay alive.
Seen some of the damage on Sunday when we went to help in-laws and after getting our place to where you can get in and out of the yard. The place that was built into the hillside (used to be a auto body shop) was gutted, I used to figure that would be a pretty protected place. Mother nature proved that wrong.

So basement is false sense of security, even one with 8-9 foot cement walls?

Didn't save some of the people east of Enderlin heck the shop that was built into the side of a hill was mostly blown out too. Doesn't take much of a Google or YouTube Search to find pictures or drown footage of the aftermath. The damage from that EF3 is just scary to drive by and look at.
There was another a few miles east that missed my in-laws by 1mi and I had a buddy video record that from the back of their house, I figure he was about 5mi from it as the crow flies

The safest place to be is a reinforced concrete building, but if that’s not an option a basement really is your best bet. An analysis of the Oklahoma tornado outbreak of May 1999, which featured an EF5 (i.e., scale-topping monster) twister, found that out of 40 deaths, 133 severe injuries, and 265 minor injuries, the total harm inflicted on people holed up in basements amounted to just one minor injury. In the Joplin, Mo. area—where the death toll stands at a staggering 155 following the tornado of May 22—82 percent of homes had no basements.

I don't think I want to test it first hand myself.
Me either! Was just thinking does a guy need to re-think the whole safety thing when it comes to twisters. Should a gjy build or buy a specific shelter made for it if the basement thing is just a false sense of security and in the end would not do much to protect you. I have been doing some random research on it and seems as though if in a basement and its not like a walk out you should be fairly safe even on an f5 as i posted above. The hard part of the researxh i have done is therr doesnt seem to be alot of info on if they were direct hits to the structures.

The odds of getting killed via tornado, lightning strike, grizzly attack, hit by a train, aquatic brain-eating ameba all gotta be about in the same neighborhood.

I think the direct hit is the big thing

I think if i was building a house i would try incorporate a gun room that also would be a fall out shelter and a storm shelter. Just cover it all in one shot. A little harder to add something like this when your place is already built.
