Other than you don't think it's needed, Why Not? It's quite a chunk of change but with a sales tax you're also getting people from a wide area helping to pay for the building instead of a property tax.

Recreational opportunities are important for a community. Don't live in DL and honestly, this is the first I've heard of the complex so I would like some reasons for or against.

sounds like lunker has an interest in a competing business... same thing happened in dickinson, city ended up buying out the business or something like that... either way, he is a prudent business man and seems to have done well for himself.

On issues like this think about ol' spock. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.... politicians should have it tattoed on thier junk...

In most cases I don't think it's so much that people don't want to modernize or upgrade but it's the crazy over the top designs that kill most of these projects .

And when it gets built the final cost will be over 30 Million. Local government at its finest!

Not only that but it looks to me like the old Bill Jerome arena has more seating capacity than this proposed Ice sheet . Two arenas in town already and spend a few million for another one . Must be parents of figure skaters behind this. Haha

Have to offer things to bring in 1) students to campus 2) Young people to town 3) Keep young families in town. A center like this (although very expensive) achieves all of these.

And before anyone mentions I don't have a dogin this fight my employer is out of Devils Lake so I do have a dog in this fight. I'm just like an illegal and can't vote on it but i'll get to enjoy all the benefits of it.

It doesn't look too over the top to me. Not everything in these towns has to be built like a Quonset. Have something the town can be proud to look at.

Viewed the video of the projected building. Really did not see anything over the top. It was definitely a nice looking building from the exterior but making something look nice does not necessarily make it expensive. You can build a very nice home without making it expensive. In most cases a home gets expensive based on size and the interior. Examples: Granite countertops as opposed to formica, or $10/yd carpet vs. $25/yd.

As for local government at it's finest. That type of comment is so tiresome to me when i see so many communities where no one ever wants to run for local government. In most communities, at least every other year (some may have an election every year) there is an election. You don't like the way your government is run, file and do a better job.

-" I want nice things for me and my family to do"
-"there's nothing to do in this town"
-"there's no place I can take my kids to do anything fun"

I've lived in a few different places, and I hear the same things. Grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. People in DL think there's nothing to do and go to GF. People in GF go to Fargo, Fargo go to MPLS. Don't matter where you live, there's "never anything to do"
I think this activity center is a good idea for the town, how it's being designed/presented/cost is what will most likely lead to it's failure, just as the design/cost of the high school addition. People want nice new things, but don't want to pay.

Everybody wants these indoor playgrounds, parks, etc for their kids. Problem is when the admission fee is more than $2 they bitch about how much it costs and don't go.

I can't vote for any of it, don't care much one way or the other. If it's there, I'm sure I'd attend events that were held at it, if it's not there, then same old same old.

People are going to bitch either way, that's the way the world goes 'round

I agree it's nice for a town to have something that looks good to be proud of and not built like a quonset but it should be multi purpose. That is a pretty hefty price tag for what little that building can actually do. If I had a dog in the fight I'd say at least spend the extra money and have seating all the way around the ice sheet so it could host a hockey tournament or other events like minot all seasons arena does. Does DL have a facility that could host a concert or a large convention besides the casino ?

Any guesses if this passes ? I'll guess 1/3 in favor 2/3 against . Based how limited the facility is VS the price tag.
