With the crazy events this year I wasn’t sure I would get a chance to fish with Captain Brian off the FV-Line Stretcher but somehow we pulled it off.

I fished with a custom painted jig by DH custom baits in the Snoody pattern. We think it’s similar color to an octopus And always catch our bigger fish on it.

About 70 miles out of the harbor is where we fished, first spot 275’ deep and mud bottom ( halibut don’t like mud ) so we pull anchor and move to a hump in 218’ and find hard bottom.

Weather was good all had a blast and caught my new PB halibut 65” long 141#s and another 56” that was 86#s. Everybody on the boat was using Snoody jigs after that !!!

Wow, just wow. One day, I'll do that too.. If I get my way.

JayKay, DirtyMike, Uncle Jimbo would be a fun trip. I’ll be the deckhand and you guys can catch fish. I know Uncle Jimbo has a score to settle with a sea monster.

Fond memories, made my first trip in "68" drove the highway. Had a business in Anchorage in the 90s an returned yearly to Sitka until 6 years ago. I'm not sure I could withstand the air travel today. You guys enjoy.

Huffranger recipe:

Cut halibut into 1.5" cubes. Marinade overnight in teriyaki sauce. Rinse cubes of halibut and wrap with bacon. Place on skewer and grill.

tinfoil on cookie sheet place pieces spaced slightly apart
bake @ 500* for 10 min or so.

1 qt water
4 T Sugar
2 T salt

boil

cut halibut in ~1in cubes. Drop a handful at a time into boiling water for ~3 minutes. Eat warm dipped in melted butter like lobster.

Halibut Olympia, tacos, cakes. Other than that, just do it like walleye.

Local price is $9/lb whole fish on sale. So that’s about $2,000 worth of halibut market price. With $300 ticks BIS-ANC right now, you could convince yourself it’s worth it

I went to Sitka in 2007 and 2008 and we came home with 50# in '07 and 75# in '08 for about $4k per trip so between $53 to $80 per pound 12-13 years ago. Lobster at home would have been cheaper, but the Alaska experience made the trips worth it. I'm glad I did it and would advise people to do it if that is what they want.

Can't do it again because with just wife and I cannot justify the expense to eat frozen fish. I can buy fresh on demand (or catch it) when necessary.

In 2007-08 we could bring back a 50# box of fish on a normal airline ticket for no extra charge. I'm not sure that is still in place. If you are thinking that going to AK to fish is being a good way to get fish cheap think again. Taking a guide on DL or SAK would be a big money saver on $$$ per pound.
