Some have claimed it was an explosives manufacturing facility

bet it was fertilizer

I worked in Texas City in 1979 when the construction company I worked for built a formaldehyde plant for Allied Chemical at their chemical facility there. Lots of locals still remembered the explosion. Bodies were laid out in the HS gym for ID purposes and the HS was never used again ... demo-ed and a new school was built as part of the rebuilding of Texas City.

The thing I'm curious about is where does this explosion rank all time. I mean seriously this has to be one of the largest non-nuclear blasts ever recorded. I'm definitely curious to see how it ranks up against Halifax. Looks to be 1.3 kt or about 118 moabs.

I've made and detonated a number of ammonia nitrate setups (military) and NOTHING was like that blast! We would do 50 - 100lbs and that was no 100lb explosion, that was over 1,000,000. I've watched a wooden structure go up and have splinters land one mile away, but concrete buildings? whoa, nellie!

You wouldn't think Iran had some sort of "tactical" devices stored in that port, would you? This was deliberate as it gets.

Ill bet warehouses at our ports are being checked out now. Luckily Obama isnt president or we would be looking for who to surrender to today.
