Reading some of these posts I feel like a dinosaur. Well shit, when I look in the mirror I realize I am a dinosaur.
I enlisted in the army in 61 right in the middle of the Berlin Crisis, shortly after my 18th birthday. I could lie and say I was inspired by JFK but I doubt patriotism had much to do with my decision. The "draft" was ongoing, I wasn't ready for college and I wanted to get my obligation over with. I had other plans for my life and filling a grave in some third world shithole wasn't among them.
I enjoyed the army, made friends I still keep in touch with (although way too many have already left us) Saw a lot of country through the bubble of a helicopter and would enlist again tomorrow if necessary.
