Not at all uncommon in Northern MN. I'd have guessed that we'd have a few roaming around. In recent years we've had mountain lions right in North Bismarck.. I never thought I'd see that day either...

Huh, and here I always thought bears just come to ND to die.

At least, every other bear I've ever heard of in the state met his demise shortly thereafter.

I believe what FieldHunter is implying is the bear actually had a den and hibernated in ND over the winter. If that is the case I would have to say that is super rare. Bears wondering through is one thing but actually having a den is another.

Had one living, hibernating, and doing it's thing south of VC for years. Doesn't bother anybody or anything and shows up on trail cams quite often. Seems that if something happens to the adult, one of the children take over the area.

There have been sightings of black bears in the Pembina Gorge for a few years now.

I spotted one in the spring in the lidgerwood area. But I though it was just out of hibernation and lost. These pictures were taken in the pembina gourge area..

Living in the northeastern part of the state we usually hear of at least one bear sighting a year, usually in the fall. I always take them for roamers and not permanent residents tho. Heck a few years back I watched one climbing trees in front of the high school in the little town of Minto.

Ha ha ha good stuff!
You should have seen the commotion we stired up when we went and dragged main in Bismarck with him riding shotgun in the truck drinking a can of mountian dew.
Took him out in the big boy parking lot, didn't take long for the cops to show up let me tell ya ha ha ha. Cleared out the beach at heart Butte on 4th of July one time to. You should have seen the look on the beach goers faces when he came running down with us through the sand to take a swim! Good times.

There was one denned up near me a couple years back. He hung around for about 2 1/2 years before moving on. Land owner had a trail cam set up just to keep an eye on him. Traveling bear seem to be more common now than they used to.

We had 2 of them, got them so small you could put them in a shoebox. Mom got them from a bear rescue place in MN. We had the one for about 4.5 years. Fed them nothing but fruits and vegetables and dog food. Never caged or chained up, just hung out with the dogs, it was pretty cool!
