Ebay for cheap rapala Shad raps and salmo hornets. These days you also cannot go wrong with flicker minnows which are a must have for Sak.

Curious, are the flicker minnows as temperamental as flicker shads when it comes to tuning?

I am missing something with this tuning thing. I have been out last two weekends and not tuned a single flicker shad. The only reason we changed a crank was the hooks broke we caught so many fish. Reef runners are easy to see how they need tuning

I was gonna suggest reef runners... I always have a hard time getting my cranks deep.... I don't use lead core line, maybe look at a clip on weight system to get the smaller flicker shad/minnows deeper

2nd the reef runners. #200 ripshads. You'll have to tune most of them (which is not hard) but hold on when you do. Wonderbread colors work wonders on Sak!

Cabelas private label version of Reef Runners (Cabelas calls them "Walleye Runners") are tuned well out of the package and catch fish every bit as good as branded Reef Runners. They're on sale right now for $2.99 for either size in their standard colors and $3.74 in either size for their fancier limited run colors. You can use Reef Runner dive data for line back/feet down. I've got quite a few Reef Runners but almost always opt to actually fish with the Walleye Runners because they're almost always tuned well from the get-go.

I rarely tune a Flicker Minnow or Shad, and I run them a lot.

maybe the variance between experiences is the flavor of snaps/swivels - some are good and some suck???

flicker minnow, size 11 and 5 (skip the inbetweens) flicker shad size 4, 6 and 9 (6 is neutrally buoyant great for pitching), salmo hornet 6f, reef runners 800 and little ripper 500... tbh with 500 i would make sure i had some good line counter reels (diawa sealine size 47 is what i use) and a couple of good cranking rods if you don't have them (cabelas or scheels brand rods are good)

For casting cranks in a lake, pond, or res it's the standard Shad Rap for me. For day to day muddin' it's yo zuri crystal minnows (4"), shallow running shad raps, and a few husky jerks. That just about covers 95% of what I use.
