Could hold or prop the ice sheet on the roof using 2x6 or something similar, then spray the roof with a garden hose when its above freezing. Would be a hell of a mess on the ground after the water freezes, but better to have ice on the ground than on the roof.

I got my avalanche. It was self induced, as I was trying to pull some snow off. Luckily the ice didn't travel up from the gutters as far as I thought. Looking forward to shoveling my deck and sidewalk off today when the snow stops. Should be about a 5k calorie workout
