Because the area between the vaulted ceiling and the roof looked like this. But the vaulted roof is masonary so it actually meant that the fire burned almost exclusively in the ceiling and the main Church itself survived primarily intact with three failures in the ceiling one clearly caused by when the spire came crashing through which was made of oak covered in lead.

Having been to a few countries in Europe, including France, I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised that there was no fire suppression system ever installed. It would wreck the historic value of it in some people's view of it all. I've never even seen anything remotely equivalent to our Americans With Disabilities laws either when you go to historical sites across Europe.

I find it kinda ironic that most of the lamestream media are all over this story documenting with the narrative what a loss of such a great structure that holds so much history of the past and the hope to have it rebuilt/restored, yet they rail against U.S. statues and such that have history, yet must be taken down or toppled as those items are now racist.;:;banghead

Isn’t it speculation to suggest that the contractors are at fault?

Why is it ok to speculate and blame one explanation (contractor error) but it’s not ok to speculate about what is, at the very least, an equally plausible explanation (malicious intent)?

Why shouldn’t news hosts also hang up on guests who suggest, to the detriment of many individual livelihoods, that negligence burned down the cathedral?
