Was pumping water out of my ditch and this guy got caught in the filter. I have a couple guesses, but can find any pictures on the Google machine to confirm what kind of fish this guy is.

I was always told sticklebacks were no good for bait. I’ve found that fish seem to eat them just fine.

I’ve had outings where the sticklebacks out caught fatheads 10:1

I think I recall that they’re infamous egg eaters... so maybe other fish demolish them out of instinct?

I’m with you guys. There has been times on the river that the walleye crushed those things. When I was a kid we were fishing at a small dam that the GNF stopped by and stocked pike. Awhile later there were clouds of them swimming at our feet. Caught one and put it in a pop bottle and threw it in a fish tank I had a handful of minnows in. Wasn’t a minute later and the stickleback had the guts sucked out of the pike.

I’m gonna start asking for sticklebacks at the minnow shop for now on.

When the fatheads start to spawn I found the stickelback was the minnow of choice. they work just fine for me.

I put them in the live well when I catch them mixed in with my fatheads so they fall on the dirt road when exiting the lake

Is anyone else having trouble finding fathead minnows to trap? I have looked in 3 different creek systems and just pulled the trap out of the cannonball tonight and nothing.

My pond is full of both fatheads and stickelbacks. I am wondering if you may not be tossing your trap too deep. They are pretty shallow right now at my place.
