Fisheries biologists will be tagging walleye on Lake Sakakawea this spring, kicking off the first of a multi-year study. The Lake Sakakawea walleye population is in very good shape right now, with lots of fish for anglers to catch and a very nice size structure. Since we’ve experienced very good fishing in recent years, this provides an opportunity to gather important population information with the help of anglers. Tagging studies provide important information on fish growth, movements and mortality rates. Biologists expect to tag 2,000-3,000 fish of all sizes (minimum of 12 inches) throughout the lake each spring, with metal jaw tags stamped with numbers. Anglers are encouraged to treat the fish like they would any other fish, meaning they can harvest the fish or release it if they like. Anglers can report the tag number on our website (https://gf.nd.gov/contact/tagged_fish_reporting ) or by calling or visiting their local Game and Fish office. Signs will be posted at ramps and fish cleaning stations with reporting information, including a QR code to make it easy for tech-savvy anglers to access the tag reporting website via their smart phone. In return, anglers who report a tag will receive a summary of information including where, when and how big the fish was at the time of tagging.
