1999 Mercury Optimax 150

Looking at a used boat with this engine on it. Wondering if these engines had any issues, what to look for or ask about, etc. Thought I had heard the opti's of that time frame had lots of issues but looking online it appears to be mainly the larger hp models?

Coils and compressor. If they have been replaced they are a great motor.

I just sold a boat that had a 1999 135 opti on it with about 600 hours and it ran flawlessly. Loved the motor. started quick and easy, and was easy on gas and oil. There were a lot of issues with the early opti's but almost all of them were the big motors 200 hp+. I would not hesitate at all to go with the one you're looking at assuming it has been well cared for. What boat is it on?

my suggestion is to call Russ at Boat Works in Mandan and he will give you an honest answer of what he has seen.

Small block Opti’s of that vintage were great. The big blocks had issues with powerhead failures.
