Means there will be sloughs that will be froze and you can walk them then. Airport it all depends on where you want to hunting coming from the west i would say rapid city and you can pick him up and start hunting.

I drove to boise,id last year it was 18 hours and then up to riggins to elk hunt. You are driving through lots of good pheasant country in montana that people over look .

There’s a good chance that whoever directed you here for information on non-resident hunting is not your friend. That’s like sending someone into a biker bar to collect signatures for your petition to make bike mufflers mandatory.

SD is much more welcoming to non-residents and guys who like to whore around with other dudes. Good luck and pepper your angus.

If you're reading this post and find yourself muttering, "he can't be serious", there's a good chance I'm not.

I don't have to out run the bear. I just have to out run you.

The 6.5 Creedmoor won’t make you a better hunter.

It will be the first trip to the Dakotas, so I'll be pestering some of you for general information.

I can't wait to hunt around there with my family. Last year, my son Grant and I went to eastern Alberta duck/goose hunting. I created a folder with a few pictures.

Big question is what are you expecting for the hunt? You have a dog and want to get it on birds? You want to freelance and are ok with whatever you get? You want a guided hunt with guaranteed limits and tons of birds? You want to hotel or stay in a lodge? More detail will let us help you out better.

I travel both states a lot for work and honestly both states are pretty sad numbers right now. 3 years ago I couldn't hardly drive without hitting birds. Now I can drive for a week and see a handful. SD is a little better but still not great.

This whole thread is what makes NDA such a fantastic site. Some random guy from 3 states away asks for help and gets HONEST feedback from a bunch of folks on how best to proceed. It speaks well for the folks on this site. Nicely done fellas!!!

Yes, more detail is always good. This will be a DIY hunt - as in no guide or lodge. More of a hotel or AirBnB and public land, type trip this time. I'm recovering financially from my daughter's very nice wedding in April!

The main goal is to make memories with my family. Dog wise, I have a 2 year old pointing lab that will hunt all day, but needs to be on more birds. Limits are absolutely not necessary, but we'll need some action.

Yes, KDM, I was thinking the same thing! Asking for help on where to hunt is very low on my list of what I want to do, but folks on this site have been extremely helpful and nice!

I try to help hunters in my area that are new to the state and get them started.

You guys are great and I greatly appreciate it.

      Carl,
It was mentioned that Eastern Montana is usually pretty decent for pheasants as well. That could save you quite a few miles on your trip. I haven't heard how they are doing with recent winters, but I would check it out instead of just driving by. Anyone in Eastern Montana have any honest thoughts for Carl?

if I wanted a great upland hunt maybe trip of a lifetime consider Kansas, bird city area western part, they farm small grain in the area phesants, shatpies, quail hun's great upland hunting experience but its been a few years since we hunted the area,we migrated from the dakotas and nebraska south to kansas when CRP went to the wayside many years ago.

just a thought ,sure you'll have a good hunt in sodak but plan on paying big money, folks still migrate to Winner sodak are from all over the country, big business banging rooster's there, you can contact the "rooster lounge" for local outfitter info last time I went thru town outfitters were getting anywhere from $350 to $500/per gun per day lodging not included with most,i'm told pheasant's are still good west of the missouri.

      FYI

PS SODAK has over 1 million acres of public walkin land to hunt plus plus once crops are down contact south dakota game fish and parks for a free catalog of the states public hunting land, south dakota is a zoo statewide 1st two weeks of opener plus the locals get 1st crack 1 week before statewide opener so few dumb birds by the time non rez can hunt,I found it best to go in november/ dec once crops are down and cold weather has em bunched up,nice looking pup Carl.

It's a lot to think about. We'll see what happens.

Whatever the outcome, I want to thank you all for your help to another out-of-state hunter. A lot of forums would not be nearly as helpful.

I'll update this thread later in the year.

      Thanks again,
      Carl
