Fished out of Sitka in 2007 and 2008. Went up just after Memorial Day weekend and fished with Frontier Charters. Mostly fished for King salmon, halibut and some rockfish and ling cod. Had good time.

Fished out of Sitka many years ago. Fished in July and kings were mostly gone, Did catch a few but a pretty good silver bite a few days. Halibut were plentiful and fun. Caught several ling cod and thought, "that is an ugly fish" so threw them back. Learned later that were supposed to be very good eating. 105# halibut was the biggest but lots in the 45-60# range. Recommend that anyone who enjoys fishing place a trip to Alaska on their bucket list.

      Who are you fishing with?
What did you think of the landing on the island?

Agreed. Yesterday I left my phone in the van that hauls is to the boats so I didn’t get any pictures. Here is one that was forwarded to me

      - - - Updated - - -

The size restrictions on halibuts are under 38 can be kept, or over 80 inches. Of course all our halibuts are under 38. We did catch a ton of 49-55 inch and had to put them back, still a blast to catch.
The King salmon also had restrictions of having to be over 28, I caught 3 of those but can only keep one per season , but the coho limit was 6 per day so we caught the hell out of them

we also caught a ton of black bass, yellow eye, black cod, and king cod.

We we are all coming home with around 60lbs of fish for 12 of us, so a pretty productive 3 day fishing trip

we fished 25 miles out in mainly 400 ft of water, the black cod was caught in 1600ft.

Awesome! Thanks for the update. How much meat does one get off of a 38" halibut?

How long does it take to reel in a fish from 1600'?

He had an electric reel on those rods. Get a bite and zip it up about 5 seconds and let it back down until all 4 hooks had been bit. Then electric reel it all the way up, took about 6-8 minutes to get all the way up

You should recover 50 to 60% of the total weight of a halibut as edible meat.
