Where you detect is sometimes not as easy as you may think. Lot of places don't allow digging up materials detected, then the trespass issue per a few friends that took up this hobby. From info I have gotten from them is don't go cheap. About $5-700
will get you a fair unit. (???) I haven't personally looked real close.

if one were to start picking up this hobby, where would one start with model of metal detector?

It's a Chevy, Ford,Dodge question. I started with an older high dollar detector that my dad bought at an auction sale many years ago, It was probably a good detector but It was extremely complicated . A couple years ago I bought a Garrett 250 for around $ 200 and got used to that and our grandkids are into it so I am looking for a better one for wife and I to use and keep the 250 faround for grandkids . I am looking hard at the Garrett At Pro. and the Minelab vanquish 540. Pretty sure I'll get the AT Pro since I already know a bit about how the Garrett 250 acts but still doing some research on the vanquish. Watching youtube videos it looks like the high dollar over a grand detectors give false readings too. I have only detected in and around our farm yard with lots of junk and few coins , I am getting better with each outing and find the old nails that have flakey rust are my most common false readings.

I like supporting local small business whenever I can, There is a guy at Jamestown named Corey Staloch DBA Dakota Detectors that I found while searching for local dealers when I bought my first one. I have never met him but he is a great source of information with competitive pricing.

He gave me permission to post his info on here. https://www.facebook.com/Dakota-Detectors-387480695338586/

I have a pint jar 3/4 full of coins and another pint jar half full of everything metal from buttons to rings, Found a broach with what looked like diamonds but were just cut glass, still fun though.

you never know what you might find until you find it .. Haha I dug up a huge disk from a feed grinder one time. It was about the size of a 16 inch truck wheel but only a half inch thick . I never saw any other parts or pieces around the farm so the rest of it must have got hauled out for scrap during WWII.
