Lincoln, kinda...
People chipping their diesel trucks and running them out of design specs is exactly why I bought new, oh so many years ago. It's been a great investment. Only problem I've run into is the Exhaust Gas Backpressure Sensor. The turbo and exhaust itself both were scoped and given a clean bill of health at around 120k. Yeah, I know that doesn't seem like a lot of miles for a modern diesel, but while the extended warranties may give you peace of mind...they don't stay in business by losing that bet. Most of these vehicles will live long past the factory and extended warranty coverage. Granted, if you are the one that gets the lemon, life will certainly suck.

- - - Updated - - -

Only extended warranty I’ve ever bought saved me $9000 in repair bills. I will trade my new diesel at end of warranty or buy an extended warranty when it’s up.

Details? Make/model/repairs?

I am not generally a extended warranty guy --- do the math its like a casino---- however when i did buy a FORD i decided i may need one -i bought one from the dealer when i bought my truck and its a self insured dealer type policy (dealer is huge). funny thing is though - took it it to the dealer had some recall work done along with fixing the camera and my emergency brake. They contact me back and say you dont want to fix the camera it cost to much. I said i have a extended warranty (i layed it on the dash when i dropped it off ) --- the dealer says you do like he had know idea -- - i am like seriously do you even look up a customer. So I was pissed -- i bitched at the service manager and took it back -- they fixed it and guess what they didnt charge the warranty or me - they just covered it. I am like why have the warranty. The guy said they had to have a code in order for the E warranty to work -- i am like serious? i put a pic of it blue screening on you tube -- that wasnt good enough. They just wanted to satisfy a pissed off customer and i guess they did.

Another warranty story --- my wife owned the most american made vehicle of all time in that current year - i wont mention the name but i can tell you it was not made by a UAW union worker. Anyhoo--- she has the rack in pinion go out on it. Her vehicle sits at hector airport or it sits in my garage. The SOB never gets used - so the time was up on the warranty and i think maybe a k or two in miles. I was like bullshit -- i told the dealer i am writing the manufacturer. The dealer practically was on their knees begging me not to and they said hang on --- pay for this one stupid maintenance item and they will cover the 3k job or whatever it was on the rack in pinion. I said ok reluctantly as it was $80 bucks for the maintenance item. But i did it and we rolled out with a new front end.

Chevy you all know my chevy story --- i had tranny and engine replaced (tranny was fixed) after warranty period - no cost to me, no bullshit, it was here you go mr. short thank you for your business.

PS the NDA - group is about 95% ford luvers, 3% chevy, Dodge 1% and Toyota 1%. If you are trying to get a honest answer on vehicles - look at another web site. They all think the sun sets on a Ford.

I dont know what the percentage of em drive a tree quarter ton -- but i would love to know how many dont have a hitch on that tree

Ps chevy put the old rusty sparkplugs 65k or more in mileage (i dont remember ) in that brand new engine. I was like -- whoaa

Anybody have any firsthand experience with the purported intake valve buildup issue on pre-2018 3.5 EcoBoosts?

I went from a 2012 crew with a 5.0 6 speed to a 2017 crew with a 3.5 10 speed. The 5.0 was a great truck pulled the camper decent and really had no complaints. Ran it to 80,000 miles with minor issues. Currently the 3.5 has 34,000 miles and has been bulletproof. It pulls so much better the the 5.0. That little V6 has so much torque I don't see the need for a diesel. I have no complaints about either but the eco is way more fun to drive, pulls better, and gets better mileage. Cousin has a 2.7 eco and does a little better on mileage, not sure about towing as he only has a little 14ft boat. Either way I'd suggest the eco just for the pure fun of driving it.

96’ dodge intrepid. Half the lemonade book was about that car lol. Let’s see if I can remember it all. First thing at 60k miles was the whole rack and pinion system. I think that was around $3800. Then the ac compressor went. Then water pump. Then I think it was head gaskets. And then the drivers side window would just randomly go down and not roll up. I think they changed out the motor and the switch etc. then the fuel rail had issues. Heater and fuel pump issues too. It was absolutely ridiculous.

I had the 3.5L ecoboost and it pulled my boat like a dream. Never had to downshift going up hills because the low-end turbo would help keep the speed and fade out at the top of the crest. However, the gas mileage sucked no matter what. Without the boat I was only getting 14.7mpg and down to 12.1mpg with the boat in tow.

However, that was a 2012 F-150 Ecoboost and only had 5-speed transmission. Now, with the 10-speed transmission that may no longer be an issue.

I solved that by buying a 2019 GMC 2500 Denali and 6.6L Duramax. I bet I won't have to worry about 12mpg any longer! lol

Yoars, I wouldn't plan on it be substantially better. Maybe a bit better when towing but empty isn't gonna gonna be a hill a beans different especially when you figure in the regen on the diesel. I fault no one for buying what they want but if your buying a brand new diesel and justifying it to the masses by better fuel mileage, well that's just a bunch of whooy, lol. Now if you need that argument to get it by the household accountant, I completely understand!

I've been pleasantly surprised with many of diesels running DEF. I know of a family member or two whos Cummins will get 20+ unloaded at 75, and a friend who has a '17 Powerstoke that is pulling the same numbers. I'd love to have one, but I can't justify it when I've only put 5k miles on my truck in the last 10 months.

Feedback in my area is good on the 3.5 lit eco boost empty, pulling is another issue, owner manuel stats to run premium fuel....also twin turbo issues around 70k miles(out of powertrain warrenty, most said stick with 5lit engine if you trailer.

Do Ecoboost owners actually run premium? Would that higher fuel cost cancel out the better fuel economy?

I NEED ANSWERS!

My wife had the v-8 in her 2012 Navigator. Was a dog. She now has a 17 Navigator with the ecoboost and it will run circles around the old one. Kinda fun to drive. Got about 22 mpg coning back from our last trip to Sconieland visiting the grandkids and those people they live with. I run regular (87) as that's what the book said to run.

Went on a trip a month ago or so. Put on 4,000 + miles on with our 16 Chevy Duramax. Our best mileage is around 78 mph and had the AC on constantly the whole trip. Best was 24 MPG and worst was 20 MPG. Averaged out to 22.5 for the whole trip. Was pleasantly surprised as just putzing around and short trips we get around 18-19. This is a plain stock vehicle and not chipped or anything. We keep track of everything on all our vehicles.

When are they going to hang a hair dryer on a gas V8 and call it day?
Tough to find a 5.0 v8 on the lot in an f150 nowadays

Premium no. Turbo issues at 70k not so sure. Maintenance on the turbos is what would worry me if I planned to own the truck forever

- - - Updated - - -

Why are we talking about all these gas engine fords when we can get a diesel in the new f150?!?

My old 5.4s are paidfore and with the mileage that's on them and the miles I put on them, the old folks home will take them away before I wear them out.

I wasn't going to wait on the turbo issues of my F-150. It was a 2012 and I only had 75,000mi on the engine. The early years of the Ecoboost were noted problems. I'm unsure if those issues were solved much with the addition of the 10sp transmission.

What I meant by this is why not put a mild amount of boost to a modern day V8 instead of boosting the pooey out of 4s and 6s? Mileage maybe? Hair dryer is slang for turbo BTW.

You can buy a supercharged Shelby F-150 with 755hp at Bill Barth. Its only 106k....let us know how the gas mileage is ;)
