Well I look forward to opening pheasant season every year I help guide and get to run my dog cedar who loves it. He had been acting a little funny but we were just at the vet last month for check up and vacation. Well took him in this morning and he had cancer in his lungs a growth pushing on his trachea had lost 8 pounds in the last month I should have noticed but didn’t. He was still beating young dogs to the birds and gave it hell every walk. Vet said maybe a week with medication so I made the decision that we would hunt one more day and he won’t suffer any more. We went out got 15 birds for the hunters and he rode up front with me for his last ride. I will miss ya cedar .

take time to write his story. On a quiet evening with a glass of bourbon or rhy those memories will be worth reading, again and again.

Shed the tear,
Wipe your face,
A dog like that,
You will never replace.
Hunt with his memory as you walk through the field,
The think of the happiness a new pup will yield.

Condolences.

I feel your pain. My favorite dog ended up with mouth cancer. That was a hard ride to the vet and back. Best wishes.

I don’t even want to think about this situation. It’s weird how attached you can get to a dog in a relatively speaking short amount of time. Sorry to hear, amigo.

Damn Kurt,
Very sorry to hear this. I know exactly how you feel, as I just went through this very same thing. Time will heal that wound and leave you with a ton of good memories!

One step closer to the end.
How sad . . . Like others, I have been through this a couple of times. I disagree, time doesn't heal all wounds. I still miss all of my pups. Somewhat surprisingly, I think of each of them often. Hunting without a dog just isn't the same, unless you have never hunted with your own dog.

Man's best friend is an understatement. Maybe I don't have good friends?

Good luck. Hopefully you can get back in the saddle and get another one. Soon.

Dan

Kurt, good on you to give him one last trip of which he loved. It may be painful, but knowing you didn't make him suffer just to keep him around is a great thing. Doesn't make it easier, but helped me with my last pup.
