I recently inherited an old shotgun from my grandpa and would like to take it out for day before putting it back in the ol gun case. Was told not to shoot steel through it so looking for another alternative - would Bismuth or tungsten be safe to shoot?

Are you going to hunt with it or just shoot it? If you just want to shoot it, the safest would be light game loads. Just make sure its safe to shoot first.

Hevi-shot Classic Double. This stuff is low velocity non-toxic, for classic fowling pieces such as your grandpa's gun. Runs about $40 a box, but it's on sale right now at Mack's Prairie Wings.

Just be darn sure it is safe to shoot with modern ammo. When those things blow up it either just rips wide open or flies like shrapnel. Can't be too safe around old firearms.

How old is old? If really old you might want to sandbag it for a few rounds just to be safe.

If you posted what kind of shotgun it is a person can tell you for sure.

That was my 1st thought as well. There are folks for whom "Old Shotgun from Grandpa" means a Remington 870 from the 60's or 70's........

Or it might be:

A Belgian A-5

A Rem 11-48

Win Super X

Win 50/59

Win 12/25

Rem 10 or 11

Win '97

Parker Damascus
Parker fluid steel

LC Smith Damascus
LC Smith Fluid Steel

Ithaca Damascus
Ithaca fluid steel

Ithaca 37

Browning Superposed

Rem 3200

French Darne

I'll stop here, but, the list could get rather long if we have to keep guessing what "Old Gun From Grandpa" means.

Careful with what ammo you land on,if said shotgun is damascus twist "not suitable" for modern shot shells shotgun makes a good coversation piece, even bismuth would'nt be a good choice because of "fps" loads, however as stated above flycarpin is spot on with hevi shot classic doubles made excluvely for older shotguns/side x side double barrels back in the day when shotgun manufacture'ers used a softer gauge steel to weld barrels together, hevi shot classic doubles is your "huckle berry" low fps also low recoil,if your old thunder stick barrel is damastic twist most often its stamped as such near the breach plus barrel fixed choke constriction as well,if worn off see a good old timer gunsmith.
