On October 10th it was 1 year since I had a pop. I used to drink 1-2 20oz bottles of Mt Dew everyday. The first month was really tough but now I will have a little craving every so often but thats it. A person doesn't realize how additive that crap is. And I feel way better at the end of the day now. I used to feel sluggish and rundown now I feel way better. I did some calculations a while back to see how bad pop (mt dew) is for you.....1 20oz bottle has 77 grams of sugar and if you drink 1 a day that equals out to 28,105 grams a year. 1 gram = .0022 pounds. So 28,105 grams equals out to 61.96 POUNDS of sugar in a year. I used to put at least 62 lbs of artificial sugar into my body every year.....thats fricken disgusting!!

Its not natural sugar you were drinking. You were drinking high fructose corn syrup. Now that is bad for you.

God bless everyone in 2020 with good health and good fishing. As I read thru these posts and consider the idea of reducing my own alcohol consumption, my mind drifts to warm summer days on the boat...and what it feels like reaching into an ice filled cooler...pulling out an ice covered beer...and then taking that first sip. Maybe I'll cut back till about mid May?

I don't know what it is, ok I do, I'm getting old, but I just rarely drink nowadays. I drank in HS when not in wrestling, a lot of weekends during the year. After HS I drank most every weekend to some extent. I loved to party, and sometimes I overdid it, but I learned to pace myself. I was often one of the last dogs hung. Seen many sunrises in my days. Even after meeting my future wife, we went out most weekends until I was 35.

But I was never one to drink much if at all during the week. A six-pack will last forever in my fridge. And I didn't ever and mean ever drink while hunting! Even on the boat I rarely ever drank much. I know that seems weird but I don't like to even have a small buzz when I fish.

I’m gonna elaborate more than I care to here, but here goes.

I’ve been getting into decent physical shape and was on a diet of sorts. Garbage in = garbage out. Decided I ought to cut out garbage. 15 years of drinking near every day got me thinking alcohol ought to take a rest. I’ve always had an ‘off’ switch, it was just a shitty routine.

Then I started coming across guys who’d had alcohol destroy their lives and their families. I’d hear things like:
- “my best friend drank himself to death by 45. Chose the bottle over his business, wife, and kids.”
- “you wonder why an alcoholic can’t just stop drinking. An alcoholic wonders how you’re able to go all day without drinking.”
- “I’ll never quit drinking, even if it kills me.”
- “my first wife was an alcoholic...”

When you go down the rabbit hole and catch a glimpse of the utter misery and destruction in an alcoholic’s life, it’s really eye opening. I’m not an alcoholic and can’t relate, but it made me realize that my ability to simply not drink, with virtually no effort, is a gift that I’m wasting every day that I’m drinking. Imagine possessing a super power and never using it... because you’d rather hang out and drink beer.

So I quit drinking, for now anyway. Im back to my high school pants size but now I can run like a mother fucker.

This is good stuff. Really. Lot of truth here.

When I first quit, I spent a lot of time in AA meetings. Met a lot of people. Some were bonkers, some were just like me. Some were far smarter than me, but lost everything. I'm talking both, highly educated people, and people who had tons of experience living. Alcohol can be the great equalizer.

I remember one thing someone said to me (I forget who...). Think about this. Be honest. In the afternoon, when you first start thinking about "rewarding yourself" with the first drink of the day, does your mouth water? Do you really look forward to it? I sure did. If that's the case, that's a pretty clear sign.

What bedwetter said above, about being able to completely take or leave alcohol, I can barely comprehend. My only frame of reference for such a thing, would be the casino. I understand some people have troubles with gambling. I'm glad I don't. But oh man, booze.

So, what I said early on, in this thread, applies too. People will be your best cheerleader right now. For a while. A day or a week or a month, or 5 years. But eventually you're going to have to stand on your own, against temptation. Do this for yourself, not your wife or kids or boss or brother or whatever... do it for yourself. You won't be sorry. I have pretty much never, if I'm being really honest, seen a family or relationship better, because of alcohol.

I thank my lucky stars I didn't get addicted. I think had I started drinking out of the fridge every day I would have. I usually took the month of August off during my party days. By the end July, when beer wouldn't even give me a buzz, I knew I needed a break.

I love beer and whiskey, rum is growing on me too, but it's very rare that i drink when i hunt and fish. I would put the odds of it at less than 5%. I get lazy when i drink and i don't like to be lazy when i'm trying to enjoy the outdoors, no time for it!

Good stuff, Moderation is key. I tried not to drink too much because I never wanted to have to quit drinking. There is nothing wrong with booze when used in moderation and if it within your budget, It bugs me to watch someone with a wife and kids drop 50 or 100 bucks at the bar if they can't afford it.
Booze was a hell of a pain killer for a few years , I was about a week into it when the old back got so bad that I needed pain pills that I knew I needed to quit one or the other. I got off the pain meds. Had I went the other route I am almost positive I couldn't have quit drinking because the booze and opies combined took over my mind. I am mostly pain free and get a good nights sleep after I started taking CBD. Booze is a good tool (or excuse) for me to get a good nights sleep if I feel like I need one, One or two belts right before bed works like a charm for me and I wake up feeling refreshed. I went on a health kick, Phase 1 was I quit beer and went with water based mixed low carb drink. Phase 2 was a bottle propel when I feel like I want that evening drink. 6 bucks a 12 pack and a good replacement for booze. If you are taking booze for pain CBD and propel is worth a try, I really don't crave alcohol at all anymore and I feel like I am in my 20s. That said, Not all people are wired the same . The older I get I am finally changing my opinion and starting to believe that addiction is a common disease that affects some people worse than others. That's based on watching people way smarter than me trade a perfect life and family for booze. If you enjoy drinking slow and steady wins the race.

Was told quite a few years ago by a friend that was a surgeon. He said colon cancer percentage really shoots up with alcohol users especially those that drink alcohol 3 or more times a week. He done lots of surgery for it and he said it scared the heck out of him once he started keeping track and researching it more. I think genetics also plays a big part in it too.

Yup, this part above, is very true. I used to think that only weak/stupid/lazy people became addicts. Thought if you're man enough, you can control it. The longer I'm on this earth, the more I see that it can control you. Not for everyone, but for many.

I almost never drink. Only a few times per year. I honestly cannot remember when I had my last drink. In all honesty, I am scared of it. I watched my mother die when I was quite young to liver disease. She drank herself to death.

To each their own. I have no issues with people that drink, and I have no problem hanging around with a bunch of people drinking while I swig down a Dew.

That being said, if I have a person in my life that drinks too much, I am of no help to them. I cannot handle it. I just walk away from them. I do understand that this is a fault of mine, but it is one I have yet to overcome.

I think someone on this sight mentioned the site. Wife and I both use the high potent tincture, I put mine in my morning coffee and she puts hers under her tongue. Very happy with the results . The MMJ program is a damn disgrace the way they have it set up.

Back during my high school days (60`s) I thought drinking was the most fun you could have.. getting drunk was a mission.

About 20,000 beers later I realized that it wasn't so great. 4 out of 5 of my best friends are alcoholics. I was the lucky one. I quit because my friends were destroying themselves.

I've seen the bottle and the damage done.

Now my friends and I enjoy life and coffee. The drama is over. Life is good.

I still drink a beer every month or so. We stay away from bars and don't miss them.

We still laugh about some of the stupid things we did.

Luckily we are all still alive. I knew several that aren't. It really sucks when you realize that your lifestyles are killing you.

Moderation. It's a plan.

I'm not kidding one bit, This stuff works like a charm for me and It helps some for my wife. The High potency full spectrum oil is what we use daily, We tried the pills and some of the other oils and salves but the full spectrum oil outshined them all.

June will mark 10 years since I have had a beer. I got to a point where I felt I just didn't need it anymore. Quit cold turkey and cigs at the same time. Since I have gotten married and have a family which prob wouldn't have happened on the path I was on. I get up everyday and feel amazing. The wife and I will still go out but just don't drink. She drinks water as she is a fitness nut and I will have a soda. l don't miss it at all.
