A couole years ago I used 178gr ELD-X in mine for bear. I shot a very good size bear in the right shoulder and found the bullet under the skin of the left hind a quarter. The shot was 396 yards. 20161020_102248.jpg

Lots of good options to take down an elk. I didn't have good luck with the 178 ELD-X, but the 180 barnes TTSX have been excellent. I'll be testing some 180 berger elite hunters in the next week or so. If I can't get those to shoot, I'll stick with the barnes.

It's hard to beat the 165 gr Hornady Interlocks. From Deer to Elk and Moose they have always held up good for me.

I have both. A heavy 300 Win mag for sitting, and a light 300WSM for walking. Like LBrandt mentioned you will find 300 Win mag everywhere. RCBS keeps track of the caliber of reloading dies they sell and how many of each. The 300 Win mag has been in the top five for the last two or three decades. Some calibers are about as scarce as frog fur.

Edit: if you reload you can push the 300 Win mag an extra 100 fps, but not so with the 300WSM. The factory has pushed the 300WSM to it's max already.

Ok question for everyone here: what’s better 300 win mag or 300 Winchester short mag.

No critter will ever know the difference. The WSM's aren't in any danger of being discontinued so brass isn't a concern, just pick the rifle you like/feels best to you.

I've sold my 300WSM and kept the 300Win Mag, but only because I have a few 300Win brass and would've had to build a supply of WSM brass.
