Getting ready to winterize our boats. Have used Quicksilver 10-30 in my 2015 Mercury Four Stroke since new. Wondering if anyone uses synthetic engine oil in their Merc four strokes. Have used synthetic oil in vehicles for years without issue. Same question for lower unit gear lube? Thanks!!

I use synthetic for the lower unit. I started using it and kept with it.

When it comes to engine oil, lower unit oil, and other lubricants, I only go with OEM.

With the cost of engines, I prefer to spend the extra money on OEM recommended lubricants. Otherwise, you maybe penny wise and pound foolish!

The whole OEM oil thingy, which are you using? My Yammie says to use either 10W-30 or a much heavier 25W-40?

At least, that's in the range of the recommended as I recall. Do you use colder weather oil, or do you run the stuff recommended for hot weather?

OEMs don’t make their oil own guys.

As long as you choose an oil that meets spec (from a major oil manufacturer) it’s really hard to screw up an engine due to the “wrong oil”.

I avoid the bargain basement brands at Mills Fleet Farm - but if they meet spec they’d probably be fine too.

10-30 vs. 25-40? I generally use my boat well into November so I have used 10-30 weight Quicksilver. Just wondering what weight others use.

Amsoil in four stroke Yamaha engine and Amsoil marine gear lube in lower unit, been using it for years in all my engines and never a failure or issue of any kind....
