Have a good friend that deer hunts every year near park rapids mn,stays in a little mom and pop motel every season, told me this year last sept this motel housed a couple of agents from the dept of ag,they were on a mission to thin out the local wolf packs preying on cattle in the area, motel mgr clamed they took out 121 wolves over a 30 day period,trapping/shooting,this never made the news just small town chatter ,however deer hunting friend said it was common to see wolves pushing deer through a nearby tamerack beaver pond he had a stand on,to this day the group has not shot a deer in two years but plenty of wolves still around.,more wolf tracks than deer tracks in fresh snow.

They give me two wolf tags with my deer tag each fall up north, that's pretty cool.
I had three come running past my tree stand in 2019.
Stopped the closest one at 40 yds. And of course it stopped behind 4 close together trees...ugh.
All I could see was its ass, if I could have a do over id have pulled the trigger right then. Instead an instant later he was on the run, I swung on him, put it on the tip of his nose like an idiot and squeezed off a shot..missing him. Again ugh.
The next day I pulled the plug at noon in my stand, hadn't seen a deer. Day before it was deer central.
My buddy quadded in and picked me up.
On the way out a big ass male ran across the trail in front of us! Up there you have to have your ammo out of your rifle. By the time I got my rifle out of the scabbard and clip out of my pocket he disappeared into the bush. Ughh again!
Ha ha
Went up to slave lake 3 winters ago. Sat in crazy cold temps dark till dark on the edge of a lake all week hunting them, never did one come to the bait. It had snowed 2 ft day before we got there, they decided to eat fresh venison and not frozen meat scraps. Before that wolves were on camera daily..ugh again! Ha ha it reached lows of -40- -50F each night, sleeping in an enclosed snowmobile trailer was interesting to say the least! Ha ha
Check out wolf hunting adventures out of Alberta.

Our outhouse, amazing how a much you appreciate a piece of Styrofoam between you and the lid! Put a scoop of sawdust over everything to keep down the smells! Ha ha

And people think wild dogs chasing deer stresses out the herd..apples to oranges in regards to the havoc a pack of wolves wreaks on most big game.

Sounds like quite the experience! Did you have a mattress, generator, and space heater at least?! Haha

Actually had a wood burner in it, wasn't bad at all..unless your bed was in back by the door.
In the mornings we took a small Honda generator out of the trailer and sat it between the two sleds and ran it for an hour with a tarp over everything to warm up the sleds so that they would start, brilliant idea.

My dad was born in 1911 and many years ago had told me these stories about wolves and growing up in north central ND.

At a young age, had one come up to the old horse barn as he hid inside. Stated he was scare and kept that memory.
One time he was working the field with horses when he saw two wolf stalking another animal. Can not remember what animal was being stall but they were unable to catch.
Neighbor has a pack of wolf hounds that he hunted with. They came up on some wolves one day while hunting and hounds took off after them. Ended up with only a couple of wolf hounds after that and he had to destroy those as they were hurt bad.

But for me who has never seen a wolf in ND, only heard of them, it is interesting to know the stories and that they were around back then. db

Wuffs....not my cup of tea. Kinda like Mtn lions. Nevertheless, someone needs to keep them in check.

As far as them eating deer, elk, ect...they've been doing that long before we were around to loath it and I'm going to guess they'll probably be around long after we're gone. If we don't kill them all, which humans tend to do from time to time.

If they're in your livestock. Show no mercy.

I will call a complete bullshit story.
There are several "agents" in that area that are called on and sleep in their own house at night.

- - - Updated - - -

found a deer this morning about 80 yards off a fairly well traveled gravel road.
You could see in the snow where 8t started/ ended.
Lots of carnage.
Weren't much left for the ravens!
To an astute observer, its obvious when you get close to a roaming pack.
Deer are jumpy and ravins n eagles are abundant.

One regret I have in my hunting life is one I still think about often.
I effed up SO bad.
Me n a buddy from Kindred nd both had tags.
I have about the best piece of private ground for wolves one can only dream of.
I set out a bait ( about 1000lbs) of fresh beef scraps alongside a Swamp.
We went back 2 days later and the amount of wolf sign was something I have not seen since::woooot::::woooot::

My biggest mistake was thinking I'd make a drive to my buddy.
I did but the wolves were circling around me big time.
If we just would wait till dark and maybe did some calling, we would been golden
I really screwed that up jumping the gun.

Oh there are wolves in this state now, don't be fooled.

I was once posted at a silo for a couple days and my com went dead. I saw a young wolf sniffing around for mice and was able to coax it in with bits of a MRE. Throughout the day I kept track of the activities and made sketches in my notebook. The wolf never let me touch him but once took dehydrated fruit cocktail from my hand.

On the second evening the wolf and I began a play sparring game which was interrupted by two Indians in a beat up '72 Chevy with cooler plentiful of beer. They were quite impressed with the interaction and told me it appeared the wolf and I were dancing. They were very interested in my M-16 and wanted to shoot it. Feeling forgotten; I explained my lack of com and was offered a ride to a telephone. I locked the rifle and gear in the official Air Force Vehicle Storage Safe then was taken to a casino. I forgot the notebook.

From the casino I contacted base after a few pulls and beers. Sorry. That was wrong: I was told to cease pulling and gulping and to await transportation. Base was pissed.

In the meantime; security to the site was re-constituted by a weasel dick named A1C Spivey. I'm sure that weasel douche stole my notebook and whined about the wolf. I found out later "Two Balls" was destroyed by BLM.

My flight chief and lt. arrived at the casino and had to help me in the vehicle due to the weight of all the quarters in my pockets. They were not pleased and I thought I was fucked. On the way back we spotted an enormous glowing disc in the distance. That's all I remember about that evening. I was eventually re-assigned.

I kept in contact with the cool Indians and the notebook was returned to me with water damage and a few missing pages. AOC has promised to tell my story to Congress.

I still get an annoying twinge in my colon.

Your entitled to your opinion,I have no reason to doubt my friends story, never ran across a federal agent in all my travels hunting throughout minnesota the last 60 years, just a few state wardens.
