Hey SD,

Pard is seriously considering a new scope. Not saying he'll get turrets but if he so decides: Can you recommend a $400ish range that's not a Hubble telescope?

Of course replies/recs are open to all. All serious suggestions get the right to buy a corndog at the State Fair. Corndogs are a good source of sodium.

corndogs are a good source of lips and assholes, guessing they are a good source of salt.

Probably makes more sense to spend the $400 on ammo. Get a PRECISE zero, and then actually do some shooting @ 300+. Somewhere in the mix, one has to have actual experience. You either gain it yourself by actually shooting, or you have someone experienced standing with you talking you through the shot.

Is he DIY in WY or guided/outifitted? If he's guided/outfitted, they will have a preference for how the rifle is sighted based upon their previous experiences and he should ask them what they prefer.

You said he's shooting a 308. What is the actual make/model of the rifle?

It's a 77. The trip is guided. He's a crack shot and won't shoot beyond 400 even with the turrets. He'll be toting one of those Stony Point tripods in case he can't sit or go prone (with field rest). I have no question on his marksmanship. He has access to a 1000yd range and will be practicing from field positions. He's not the type to hazard a "long" shot in wind. I'm not sure he's even open to the idea of turrets.

^^^^even as the turrets could facilitate a longer poke

UPDATE: 130ish 4X4, ranged 251yds, high shoulder shot/DRT. Practice and self imposed limit of 300yds paid off. Pard's first experience hunting out of woods. He could see the top of Devil's Tower at the kill site. FYI: 2in high @ 100/4in low at 3 using first hold over stadia. Pard shaded slightly high with main crosshair and hit essentially POA.

There must be some difference in scope measurements. I had a Bausch and Lomb on a 300 Win Mag and sighted in for 200 yards the post was on at 300 yards on 9 power. It was on at 400 yards on 7 power 500 yards on 5 power and 600 yards on 3 power. The opposite of what you woukd want because things got small on 3x.

Speaking of practice I don't spend money on tobacco products or booze, but I sure shoot my wallet empty. This year I have run through 1500 centerline rifle, and 3000 9mm.

It's been a long time since I have paid any attention to factory ballistics. SDFM I seen your post of a 300 mag energy at 800 yards. My 270 has more than that. My 300 WM does have a 28.25 inch barrel, but I also have double the energy at 800 yards.

I'm having a hard time posting to this thread out here in the pasture. Time to out the old 300 on the bipod. Seen an ok buck at 100 yards yesterday. I woukd have tripped the trigger if he was bigger or if he went to 800 yards.;:;popcorn

If I make the switch to 175gn Badlands BullDozer II in the 300Win I get a projectile w/BC of .605 and 3250fps. At that point, it's similar to your chart in that it's got double the energy @ 800yds and just under 1sec TOF. I stopped fiddling w/the 300 this spring when MT gave me the middle-finger on a combo tag.

What I did finish was a load for my 1:8 Lilja/Kimber 270Win. 140gn Badlands Super-BullDozer w/BC of .650 @ 3075 from a 22" bbl/7# all-up package. Curious to see how the projectile performs on a deer and that'll tell me if I want to pursue the 175/300Win combo for elk.

Quite honestly, I could shoot the 300Win/200gn TSX @ 2950 forever and not feel like I was missing anything. It's been a very efficient killer for me.
