Odd post that is about to succumb to nature, any ideas what it is or if it is important?

That or land line telephone or some other utility. Do the numbers make sense in correlation to land description ? People collect those aluminum numbers and repurpose them.

It's the new ND no hunting sign....just about as vague as electronic posting.

Seems legit.

Don't post that thing's location or you'll have pipeline protestors from here 'til Christmas.

I assume some sort of utility marker, don't dare lean on it or it will tumble.
There is a 1/2" dia. rod of some sort, steel I think that was sticking up about an 1" above ground, some 15" away. I tried to pull it a bit, no dice. Tried driving it straight in, no dice. So I bent it over and kept going.

Old land survey monument? Used to help find the actual survey point such as an iron rod in close proximity.

ya mean like the rod he bent over? lol.

in hindsight, that seems a bit more logical. who knows how to access and use the federal survey marker databases?

don't recall land survey posts having signs on them

They've all been "low key". Often a brass plaque at ground surface.

what's that short little metal doodad just above the sign?

I missed the post where you mentioned the pin

slappy and lunk are almost certainly correct

All right of ways in North Dakota have land survey markers on them or could be a survey marker for a railroad track next time you drive down any highway you can see either the concrete marker it will have a pin in the ground next to it or an old land survey sign like this one that will have a steel pin in the ground. This picture is definitely a land survey sign especially with the steel rod that is adjacent to this sign as to what it pertains to unless image was taken farther away one could only guess to its purpose.

These are land survey markers used to provide information either to what slappy said a witness post or utility-row easement line.
Sorry I didn't read that slappy had already solved the mystery good work

The doodad above the sign is the remains of a smaller sign, the portion remaining is the same fiberglass looking material as the other sign. don't mind the wood crap on the back corner, bird feeder.
