It might be of interest to note that SWITZERLAND is not shown on this list, because it has... NO MURDER OCCURRENCE!

However, SWITZERLAND 'S law requires that EVERYONE:

1. Own a gun.

2. Maintain Marksman qualifications ... regularly .

Did you learn anything from this??

I think the message is - loud and clear...

There is a little more to Switzerland than that, I've researched a bit. Frist, you don't HAVE to own a gun, saying so is false (more below). Yes, they do encourage youth shooting and firearms training, even having a national shooting competition. But they also have mandatory military service for males in which the militia keeps their guns at home if they wish and can purchase them once they are done. Gun purchasing is much more stringent with anyone convicted of crimes (one higher level or multiple lower level) or drug offenses not being allowed to purchase. There are also mental health type purchasing stops in place.

Keep in mind you have to have a permit to purchase a gun. It's valid for one gun and a period of time. They check into you to see if you are considered safe to have a gun. Concealed carry is limited and seldom issued. In order to get a license to carry concealed, you have to show a reason for needing the self defense and pass a handgun proficiency test. Unless you need one for work, most people can't get a concealed carry permit. And you can't have a gun loaded in transport either, ammo must be kept separate. Hunting and sporting use of firearms is basic and pretty much unregulated otherwise.

There are certainly things that can be learned from this. The mandatory military service instills responsibility and trains a good portion of the population. The government encourages firearms competency. They limit purchasing to those who can prove they can/should have the guns. Concealed carry is done on a competency basis as well. Add it all up and you can see why their statistics are better than most armed countries. They still have gun violence, just reduced. I however don't think most 2nd Amendment purists would go for many of these controls. Having to get a permit for EACH gun you purchase? Not being able to carry concealed? No loaded guns anywhere? Before anyone gets too excited about what they do, I'd suggest reading the fine details first. Guessing a paradigm shift won't happen after doing that, but I could be wrong.

Switzerland's gun culture was created to keep the bad out. Germany didn't invade because it was too costly as all were armed and ready to fight. In the US, our gun culture is more structured around fighting from within- preventing tyranny. That is also significant in the overall culture and use of guns.

Looking down the list, until you get to South Africa, and then again at Brazil, a lot of those worst countries are located in hot climates. I think, there's your x-factor. I too am generally uncomfy, and murderous, when I'm hot.

I’m surprised Nevis and St. Kitts were that high. I felt quite safe on Nevis. Must be skewed due to low population.
